El Internet de las Cosas está en fase de expansión, un proceso que se espera que se agilice con el despliegue de redes 5G. La nueva generación de comunicaciones móviles comenzará a implantarse a partir de 2019 y se prevé que creará un entorno favorable para la multiplicación de dispositivos conectados, gracias a la mejora de las conexiones M2M que facilitan la mejora en la velocidad y la reducción de la latencia.
Las previsiones indican que su impacto será mayor, pero el IoT es ya una tecnología con un alto grado de penetración en el terreno empresarial. Así lo indica un estudio de Fujitsu con la consultora IDG, en el que se detecta que tres de cada cuatro empresas han adoptado de una forma u otra propuestas de Internet de las Cosas. En concreto, un 48% de organizaciones está desarrollando proyectos IoT de los que ya obtiene resultados. El 29% tiene este tipo de iniciativas operativas en distintas áreas de la compañía, mientras que el 14% está en fase piloto y el 10% en planificación.
Para el estudio se ha entrevistado a 330 responsables de áreas de negocio y TI de compañías de tamaño medio y grande de 13 países, que cuentan con capacidad de decisión en Europa, incluyendo España, y Asia.
Los encargados de suministrar las soluciones necesarias para implantar estos proyectos son, mayoritariamente, especialistas en IoT, seguidos por los dedicados a mercados verticales y grandes servicios de consultoría. Solo en uno de cada cuatro casos se encargan expertos internos. Dentro de la propia plantilla, el perfil que gestiona estas iniciativas es, en el 38% de los casos, alguien vinculado al equipo de TI. Para un 24% es responsabilidad de desarrollo de negocio o líneas de negocio relevantes. En cuanto a las herramientas en las que se apoya el despliegue, analítica e inteligencia artificial están muy vinculadas a la estrategia de implantación de IoT.
A la hora de abordar un proyecto de IoT, las organizaciones buscan, mayoritariamente, mejorar la productividad y la eficiencia, en un 57% de los casos, y lograr un análisis más profundo de los datos que apoye la toma de decisiones, lo que cita un 52% de personas encuestadas. Un 43% se plantean como objetivos mayor seguridad y mejora de las políticas de salud del equipo, así como un mejor soporte y servicio a los clientes. Una de cada tres detecta mayor grado de eficiencia gracias a la automatización de los procesos M2M, la misma proporción de los que creen que aporta mejor rentabilidad de productos y servicios, permitiendo diferenciarse de competidores.
En cuanto a los obstáculos que se encuentran en el desarrollo de proyectos IoT, la mayor dificultad que se detecta es la falta de habilidades, citada por un 52% de los participantes. Un 48% de las personas encuestadas manifiesta no estar segura de cómo progresar, el mismo porcentaje que protesta por falta de apoyo por parte de las áreas de gestión. El 43% señala como impedimentos la regulación y sus cambios, una cuota igual que la de los que consideran que la conectividad es una barrera. Para uno de cada cuatro, el mercado aún no está maduro.
El informe detecta dos mercados clave para el IoT: retail y manufactura. En el comercio minorista tendrá un empleo estratégico para temas de seguridad y marketing, mientras que en manufactura se usará para control en tiempo real de activos, automatización de tareas y trazabilidad.
