Si hubiera que definir el grado de madurez de IoT en las empresas, primero habría que determinar en qué fase se encuentran sus proyectos. La propuesta del brazo de analítica de IDG, IDG Research, establece cinco: la fase de sensorización, la de eficiencia operacional, la de innovación de productos, la de creación de nuevos modelos de negocio y la de plataformas.
La mayoría de las empresas (40%) están en la sensorización, una etapa en la que el objetivo es crear una solución técnica que funcione y en la que se busca obtener información; no son proyectos transformadores per se y uno de los retos a superar es el ROI.
Los modelos más sofisticados adoptados en las empresas apenas alcanzan en 5%, principalmente porque genera muchas dudas. “Estos ecosistemas aún están por escribir”, ha comentado el analista de IDG Research, Fernando Maldonado, en una mesa de debate organizada por IDG Research y que ha tratado sobre Cómo asegurar el éxito de IoT. Hay muchas dudas por resolver, ha dicho, y fundamentalmente tienen que ver con cómo se reparten los ingresos, con cómo se opera y actualiza la infraestructura, con cómo van a competir en el mercado las diferentes plataformas y con quién coordina estos ecosistemas.
Con la intención de descubrir cómo respiran las empresas españolas, IDG Research y Software AG han reunido a representantes de compañías de diferentes sectores de actividad, desde Infraestructuras, hasta Sanidad, pasando por Banca, Energéticas, Retail e Ingeniería.
Los sectores de Salud y Energía son, probablemente, los más maduros. En parte por una cuestión histórica. En el caso del sector de Utilities, se ha utilizado la sensorización durante años, sobre todo en la parte de generación eléctrica y transporte, con el objetivo de mejorar el mantenimiento y la fiabilidad de sus activos, principalmente.
En el sector Salud “la sensorización ha existido siempre” también, aunque “no estaba conectada con la información clínica”, ha dicho Ángel Luis Sánchez, jefe del Servicio de Arquitectura y Normalización del Servicio Madrileño de Salud.
En el caso concreto de Iberdrola, compañía representada en la mesa por Agustín Valencia Gil-Ortega, responsable de Ciberseguridad Global OT, el ahorro de costes ha llegado a través del mantenimiento preventivo, pero ve difícil monetizar otros activos. “La parte más disruptiva la vemos en televisión, con los contadores inteligentes. Aquí no hay ROI como tal, pero sí por la parte de fidelización”, ha expuesto.
En el caso sanitario, Sánchez se pregunta cuál es el modelo de negocio para monitorizar a un paciente fuera del hospital.
Para Ignacio Basanta, experto en el sector de Seguros y Banca de Software AG, hay tres fases en función del sector. Todas las empresas tienen dispositivos, se trata de sensorizarlos para ahorrar, como ocurre con el mantenimiento predictivo. La siguiente fase está en la mejora de la experiencia de usuario y la tercera, en la que están muy pocos, confiesa, es la del asset as a service, la de vender servicios, esto es, la de rentabilizar la tecnología. “Aquí llegan pocos”, ha advertido.
La Banca, presente en la mesa a través de Abel Álvarez, T&O, CIO Servicio de Banco Santander y Antonio García Pascua, responsable de AI en BBVA, está centrando gran parte de sus esfuerzos en IoT en la oferta de una buena experiencia del cliente. “Estamos trabajando en la monitorización de los servicios que damos a los clientes, en darles el mejor servicio”, ha revelado Álvarez. No es la única área, matiza, también sensorizan aplicaciones para obtener información en servicios. BBVA por su parte, se está centrando en ofrecer una experiencia única al cliente. “Hay que estar en todos los dispositivos que el cliente usa; necesitamos conversaciones”, ha seguido García Pascua.
En el sector de Transportes, la monitorización es cada vez más intensa y está ligada a la aparición de nuevos medios de transporte al alcance de los ciudadanos. Cada tipo de transporte tiene un enfoque diferente: en el caso de los autobuses, explica Rafael Gil, CIO de Avanza, hay un componente de información al cliente en el caso de bicicletas y patinetes, se trata de un enfoque mucho más operacional. Claro que estos servicios tampoco son monetizables, admite.
Nicasio Murillo, responsable de TI/Sistemas de Metro de Madrid, explica que la entidad está en un proceso de transformación, sin hacer mención a la previsión de un ROI. “Vamos a modernizar toda la tecnología de las estaciones, esto pasa por considerar todos los objetos”, desde la cartelería hasta los interfonos.
Esta dificultad de rentabilizar proyectos de IoT tiene que ver con la falta de madurez de la tecnología. Claro que sin un horizonte de ingresos claro, es difícil apostar por la inversión. Es la pescadilla que se muerde la cola. “Consideramos que no está lo suficientemente maduro como para hacer una gran inversión. Las grandes empresas como nosotros no podemos poner todos los huevos en la cesta”, ha dicho José Lóbez, responsable de Ciberseguridad de El Corte Inglés.
Eso sí, hay quien ha llenado su cesta. Basta con mirar al otro lado del Atlántico.
“Los nativos digitales lo tienen fácil porque acaban de empezar, el resto nos tenemos que transformar”, reflexiona Francisco Lova, experto en el sector de Transportes de Software AG, una reflexión que ha contado con la conformidad de la mesa.
Pero hay que ser optimista. ¿Por qué no apostar y poner en marcha pequeñas pruebas de concepto sin poner en riesgo el negocio tradicional? Lanza Belén Ruíz, responsable de Marketing de la compañía alemana, anfitriona del encuentro. Una opción es crear laboratorios para hacer pruebas de concepto.
“Hay que dar un paso al precipicio: si no lo haces tú alguien lo hará; muy probablemente los nativos digitales que no tengan lastre”, ha reflexionado Relaño, CIO de Bosch.
