La mejora de la experiencia de cliente es uno de los motivos principales por los que los responsables de la parte de TI de las empresas se deciden a embarcarse en la transformación digital. Más allá de servir de desencadenante del propio proceso, la interacción con los usuarios está provocando una serie de cambios en la forma de entender la infraestructura que, a su vez, tiene consecuencias para los proveedores de sistemas informáticos y tecnológicos. Entre estas estaría el desarrollo del ‘edge computing’ o computación en el extremo, que facilita que las operaciones se lleven al borde de la red, más cerca de la interacción o punto de contacto digital de la empresa con el usuario, en vez de obligar a que pasen por la nube.
Este modelo está en plena expansión, en línea con la multiplicación de dispositivos conectados, que se espera alcancen los 40.000 millones en 2023, y de la propia tecnología, que habilita usuarios digitales en sus relaciones comerciales o empresariales. Los negocios están respondiendo a este cambio; de hecho, la consultora Gartner pronostica que, para 2021, el 65% de los proveedores de servicios de infraestructura global generarán el 55% de sus ingresos a través de servicios relacionados con el borde de la red, que ayudarán a los clientes a crear negocio en los puntos de contacto digitales.
Además, una encuesta de la compañía de estudios de mercado estima que un 27% de organizaciones ya están planeando explotar el ‘edge computing’ como parte de su estrategia de infraestructura, y para finales de 2019, el 70% espera que este tipo de computación sea relevante para su plan de infraestructura.
Para Gartner, el aproximar la gestión a la interacción del usuario lleva a un cambio del modelo de infraestructura. La nube proporciona la base para infraestructuras ágiles como facilitadores y tecnología de fondo para negocios digitales, pero las demandas en los puntos de contacto son diferentes. Esto se debe a los requisitos de interacción y toma de decisiones en tiempo real, el incremento en los datos que se producen, los requisitos de autonomía y la demanda de seguridad y privacidad.
Como resultado, el almacenamiento y los servicios informáticos deben ubicarse físicamente más cerca de las personas, lo que obliga a los servicios a entregarse desde la nube hasta el borde. Esto llevará a que la mitad de las grandes organizaciones integrarán en 2022 los principios del ‘edge computing’ en sus proyectos: no llegará con la tecnología cloud para atender a la demanda de conectividad, que exige además buenas respuestas en velocidad, latencia y ancho de banda. Así, los proveedores de servicios de infraestructura tendrán que explotar este crecimiento extendiendo los servicios más allá del borde en el soporte de puntos de contacto digitales.
La consultora adelanta algunos de los servicios que los proveedores ofrecerán como parte de este cambio de modelo hacia la computación en el extremo. Por ejemplo, se incluirán elementos de gestión de infraestructura, que permiten un enfoque de plataforma todo incluido, desde el núcleo hasta la nube y el extremo, para poder así dar soporte a los puntos de contacto digitales de los clientes. Se facilitará la integración de la infraestructura, para garantizar una integración ajustada, fluida y basada en API, que combine la infraestructura en nube y extremo con entornos ‘on-premise’, dispositivos periféricos, servicios en la nube, plataformas de middleware, datos, procesos, puertas de enlace y dispositivos móviles; además, se reforzará su seguridad.
Por último, la consultora prevé que se incluirán, también, servicios de gestión de datos y gobierno, para supervisar así el ciclo de vida de los datos generados y recopilados en los puntos de contacto de borde y digitales.
