La UPM, junto a otras organizaciones europeas, impulsa una videoconferencia ultrasegura con el fin de garantizar que los datos transmitidos a través de una red sean inmunes a cualquier intento malicioso o ciberataque.
La Digital Assembly, organizada por la presidencia sueca del Consejo de la Unión Europea y la Comisión Europea, ha tomado la ciudad de Estocolmo como telón de fondo. Una cita que ha servido para mostrar el liderazgo de Europa en la creación de tecnología propia en diferentes áreas: desde la inteligencia artificial a las comunicaciones cuánticas. Dichas líneas de investigación se ven impulsadas por una fuerte colaboración público-privada y transfronteriza a lo largo y ancho de la Eurozona. Muestra de ello, el proyecto de videoconferencia ultrasegura presentado en sociedad a cargo de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) en colaboración con otras organizaciones europeas de renombre. Una solución impulsada con el propósito de garantizar que los datos transmitidos a través de una red sean inmunes a cualquier intento malicioso de interceptación o descifrado de información.
La demostración de la iniciativa consistió en una videoconferencia entre el escenario principal del evento y el área de exhibición. Esta comunicación estuvo protegida por una tecnología incipiente que cifra la información que se comparte para hacerla invulnerable frente a cualquier ataque. En este sentido cabe destacar que dicha tecnología se basa en la comunicación cuántica, que aprovecha las propiedades fundamentales de la mecánica cuántica para lograr niveles de seguridad sin precedentes. Utilizando lo que se denomina “distribución cuántica de claves”, es posible asegurar que los datos transmitidos a través de una red sean invulnerables a cualquier intento malicioso de interceptación o descifrado, inclusive si el atacante es un ordenador cuántico.
Con el aumento de las amenazas cibernéticas sofisticadas, el desarrollo de tecnologías de comunicación cuántica ofrece un camino seguro para la protección de la información sensible y para habilitar nuevos canales de comunicación confiables. Lo novedoso de esta videoconferencia reside en que es la primera demostración técnica a escala de lo que se llamará Infraestructura Europea de Comunicaciones Cuánticas (EuroQCI). El objetivo es el de establecer un canal ultra seguro de comunicaciones para las administraciones públicas, salvaguardar la infraestructura crítica y fortalecer los sistemas de encriptación en toda la Unión Europea.
Para llevar a cabo la conexión, la información viajó de forma segura entre los laboratorios e instalaciones de las diferentes organizaciones participantes, que la procesaron de manera remota desde diferentes localizaciones en España, Italia, Alemania y Suecia, entre otros. Así, como si de un corazón se tratase, produjeron una sístole y diástole de información a lo largo de la geografía europea para conectar, de manera segura, ambos extremos de la videoconferencia. Para hacerlo posible, se utilizaron dos pares de dispositivos cuánticos que conforman la capa cuántica de la infraestructura. Estos dispositivos establecieron claves cuánticas seguras entre dos ubicaciones, garantizando la máxima protección en la comunicación.
La Universidad Politécnica de Madrid desempeñó un papel central en este experimento: el grupo de Investigación en Información Cuántica (GIICC) del Center for Computational Simulation aportó, además de su amplia experiencia, el propio diseño de red del experimento y un novedoso software de red basado en el disruptivo paradigma de redes definidas por software (SDN). Este permite gestionar las claves cuánticas así como todos los elementos de la red, incluyendo dispositivos de comunicaciones cuánticas de una manera transparente. La tecnología usa, además, estándares desarrollados en Europa que también han sido promovidos por la UPM.
El nuevo software permite la creación de redes cuánticas complejas y desempeña un papel fundamental en el funcionamiento, la integración de dispositivos y la gestión de recursos de la red cuántica de Madrid (MadQCI). La tecnología, basada en el paradigma SDN, posibilita que nuevas tecnologías de red, como las basadas en mecánica cuántica, operen en cooperación con las redes clásicas que usamos habitualmente, facilitando la integración de los diferentes dispositivos de los diversos proveedores industriales que participan en la red.
El despliegue SDN sobre infraestructuras de redes en producción permite una alta heterogeneidad y versatilidad que hacen de la red cuántica de Madrid un referente en el campo de las comunicaciones cuánticas. Y fue precisamente este software el que jugó un papel crucial en Estocolmo, ya que sirvió como elemento cohesionador, funcionando como el cerebro de la red, para garantizar la interoperabilidad de los diversos proveedores europeos que forman parte de la red paneuropea que se simuló durante la videoconferencia.
