En los últimos años, los servicios de salud han adoptado la digitalización de la atención de pacientes, a la vez que han optimizado la conectividad y el acceso a los recursos en un esfuerzo por brindar mejores resultados para los usuarios y mejorar la calidad de su salud.
Y aunque se ha recorrido un largo camino en poco tiempo, todavía queda mucho trabajo por hacer para garantizar que todos tengan acceso a entornos médicos de calidad. De ahí que ser consciente del potencial que se vislumbra en el sector de la salud digital es fundamental para avanzar. En la actualidad, los beneficios generados por el enfoque en la tecnología son evidentes en muchas áreas de servicio, entre ellas, la atención virtual, la telesalud y la supervisión remota.
Durante mucho tiempo, los sistemas de salud de todo el mundo se han enfrentado al desafío del envejecimiento de la población, el acceso rural a los servicios y el aumento de enfermedades crónicas como el cáncer, la diabetes y las enfermedades cardíacas. Si bien se implementaron tecnologías digitales en muchas áreas para ayudar a combatir estas enfermedades y dar apoyo a los sistemas de salud, los retos han aumentado a lo largo del último año. Con los sistemas médicos colapsados o incapaces de brindar atención personal, se ha producido un enorme incremento de los servicios de telemedicina y consultas remotas, junto a una mayor demanda de información electrónica sobre salud.
Apoyar a los sistemas de salud para que se recuperen y se modernicen se ha convertido en una prioridad, ahora que los gobiernos buscan nuevas políticas sociales. Es obvio que en el año 2020 se produjo una aceleración sin precedentes de las tendencias dirigidas a la transformación digital en la atención sanitaria. Según una encuesta de Deloitte a actores clave del ámbito de la atención sanitaria en Europa, casi el 65% de los encuestados afirmó que su organización había incrementado la adopción de tecnologías digitales para respaldar la forma de trabajar de los médicos. Un porcentaje similar (el 64,3%) informó que su organización aumentó la adopción de tecnologías digitales para proporcionar apoyo virtual y nuevas formas de relacionarse con los pacientes.
De cara al futuro, entre 2021 y 2024, se espera que el gasto mundial en salud alcance una tasa de crecimiento anual compuesto (CAGR) del 3,9%, respecto al 2,8% registrado entre 2015 y 2019. El crecimiento más rápido se dará en Asia y Australasia (5,3%), así como en las economías en transición de Europa Central y Oriental (5,2%), mientras que el crecimiento más lento se producirá en América Latina (0,7%). Lo cual supone una oportunidad para que los gobiernos comiencen a plantear servicios de salud abiertos, equitativos y pensados a futuro mediante tecnologías digitales.
La aceleración que hemos visto en el último año es solo una pequeña parte de lo que es posible realmente. En muchos países de todo el mundo, la telesalud ha permitido realizar citas médicas, a la vez que las terapias de salud mental se llevaron a cabo gracias a las plataformas de video basadas en la nube. Asimismo, en algunos hospitales, las desbordadas salas de cuidados intensivos lograron el respaldo de plataformas basadas en datos, permitiendo una supervisión flexible, escalable y remota de los pacientes, lo que ayudó a ampliar la capacidad del personal y, al mismo tiempo, sincronizar los datos de los dispositivos médicos para permitir el análisis en tiempo real. La oportunidad para que la tecnología refuerce la eficiencia operativa a través de canales digitales es enorme, pero depende de la infraestructura de nube híbrida fundacional, la confianza en la privacidad de los datos de los pacientes y la seguridad de los registros médicos electrónicos. Con el Reglamento General de Protección de Datos (RGPD) vigente en la legislación de la UE desde 2018, los procesos digitales pueden fomentar la innovación en este ámbito y ofrecer una protección sólida que ayude a mantener la confianza de los ciudadanos.
Así, esta oportunidad de transformar la atención de la salud de manera digital llega en un momento emocionante y crucial para la innovación tecnológica. Gracias a las nuevas tecnologías de conexión que se vislumbran, como el 5G, nos encontramos en la cúspide de una nueva era de atención de la salud enfocada en el paciente y basada en datos. Además, si se tienen en cuenta las desigualdades digitales que salieron a la luz durante el año pasado, comprendemos mejor lo importante que resulta reconstruir los servicios de salud de una manera equitativa, eficiente y accesible para todos. Esto significa mantener a los pacientes en el centro de la innovación y, al mismo tiempo, aplicar conocimientos profundos y fiables de las tecnologías que prometan una revolución en la atención sanitaria.
Las posibilidades están al alcance de la mano. La IA está acelerando los diagnósticos de cáncer y mejorando los resultados de los pacientes con tratamientos de precisión. La conectividad 5G promete capacidades de cirugía robótica que permitirá a los cirujanos operar de forma remota. Mientras tanto, la IoT ya está optimizando la atención al paciente, mientras que las plataformas basadas en la nube permiten a los pacientes de las zonas rurales acceder a servicios básicos de salud. Sin embargo, para hacer que estas posibilidades sean universales y evolucionen mucho más es clave reforzar las bases de la atención de la salud digital. Invertir hoy en las tecnologías que respaldarán la atención médica del mañana es fundamental para garantizar la salud de los pacientes futuros y la mejora de las sociedades globales.
