McKinsey & Company ha presentado las conclusiones de su estudio ‘Internet of Things: Ponerse al día con una oportunidad que se acelera’. En él se estima que el valor económico potencial que el Internet de las cosas (IoT) podría generar para 2030 es de entre 5,5 y 12,6 billones de dólares en todo el mundo, incluido el valor captado por los consumidores y clientes de los productos y servicios de la IoT. Actualmente, esta tecnología es una de las tendencias fundamentales subyacente a la transformación digital de empresas y economía. Ya está integrado en la vida de los consumidores y en las operaciones de empresas y gobiernos.
El potencial de valor económico de esta industria se concentra en determinados sectores, siendo las fábricas (que incluyen producción estandarizada en manufactura, hospitales y otras áreas) las que representarán la mayor cantidad de potencial valor económico de IoT, alrededor del 26%, en 2030. En concreto, este mayor potencial viene de la optimización de las operaciones en la fabricación, haciendo más eficiente la gestión diaria de los activos y las personas. Las aplicaciones de gestión de operaciones en fabricación podrían representar entre el 32 y el 39% del valor económico total potencial de IoT creado dentro de la propia fábrica, o entre 0,5 y 1,3 billones de dólares, para 2030.
El sector de la salud humana es el segundo con mayor potencial, representaría alrededor del 10 al 14 % (entre 0,5 y 1,8 billones de dólares) del valor económico estimado del IoT en 2030. De hecho, en los últimos cinco años, el valor percibido de este tipo de soluciones dentro de la atención sanitaria ha aumentado y la concienciación de los consumidores ha crecido de forma significativa. Desde los monitores de glucosa y corazón conectados para pacientes con enfermedades crónicas hasta las soluciones de mercado masivo que monitorizan la actividad física; las soluciones no sólo las utilizan los clientes particulares, sino que también las ofrecen algunas aseguradoras y gobiernos como forma de mejorar la salud y los resultados de los pacientes. Aquí cabe destacar que la pandemia de Covid-19 ha acelerado potencialmente el uso de las soluciones de IoT en la atención sanitaria.
i hablamos del sector que más rápido crecería en términos de valor de la IoT para 2030, sobresalen los vehículos autónomos (que incluyen la automatización de la conducción parcial, o autonomía de nivel dos, y superior) que tienen una tasa de crecimiento prevista entre 2020 y 2030 del 37% (hasta 0,3 billones de dólares en 2030, desde 0,01 billones en 2020) en el escenario de gama alta. El aumento constante del uso de sensores en los vehículos continuará a medida que los consumidores demanden mayor seguridad y fiabilidad. De hecho, durante la primera mitad de esta década, se espera que el aumento de las funciones de seguridad represente gran parte del valor añadido de IoT.
El estudio también analiza su implantación en entornos B2B (Business-to-Business) y B2C (Business-to-Client), siendo el primero el que puede crear la mayor parte del valor del IoT (cerca del 62-65% o lo que es lo mismo 3,4-81 billones de dólares) para 2030. No obstante, el segundo también está creciendo, impulsado por la adopción más rápida de lo esperado de soluciones de IoT en el hogar.

Por países, China se sitúa a la cabeza y se está convirtiendo en una fuerza global de IoT, no solo como centro de fabricación y proveedor de tecnología, sino también como mercado final para crear valor. De hecho, se espera que el mundo desarrollado represente alrededor del 55% del valor económico estimado de IoT en 2030, siendo el gigante asiático responsable de aproximadamente el 26% de ese valor.
Aunque el valor económico potencial de IoT es considerable, su captación ha resultado un reto, sobre todo en entornos B2B. Muchas empresas han tenido dificultades para pasar de los proyectos piloto a la captura de valor a escala con éxito. El estudio estima que el valor total capturado en 2020 (1,6 billones de dólares), está en el extremo inferior del rango de los escenarios trazados en el informe de McKinsey & Company realizado en 2015.
Esta investigación comenzó en 2020, antes de que la propagación del virus SARS-CoV-2 provocara una pandemia mundial en el primer trimestre de ese año. Aunque el informe no se centra únicamente en el impacto de la pandemia, ésta ha actuado como catalizadora para el despliegue de soluciones de IoT en áreas específicas.
