Los datos facilitados en el último informe indican que las entidades españolas han obtenido una subvención de 3.638,1 millones de euros para la investigación, superando la financiación obtenida en todo el VII Programa Marco (2007-2013) y situando a España como el cuarto país de la UE, después de Alemania, Reino Unido y Francia. Una de cada cuatro propuestas que han conseguido financiación de H2020 cuenta con presencia de entidades españolas. En total, 5.297 entidades de España ha participado en proyectos de este programa de investigación europeo.
Hoy en día está fuera de toda duda que la innovación científica y tecnológica incrementa la productividad y competitividad internacional de las empresas, siendo una garantía para aumentar el bienestar social y el desarrollo económico. En este entorno, hay compañías que deciden investigar con recursos propios y sin acceder a este tipo de programas marco, ya sean nacionales o internacionales, evitando tener que presentar y cumplir con todos los pliegos de condiciones exigidos para lograr la financiación correspondiente. Si bien es cierto que son motivos y prácticas respetables, desde Cype estamos convencidos de que acceder a este tipo de ayudas y participar en proyectos de investigación implican una serie de beneficios que pueden marcar el futuro de una compañía, independientemente de su tamaño y facturación.
Desde que accedimos al primer programa de investigación en el año 2009 lo hemos comprobado: Cype ha crecido como empresa, hemos creado alianzas estratégicas en Europa, nos hemos internacionalizado más rápido y hemos alcanzado nuestros objetivos fijados de una forma más eficiente. Por ello, nos gustaría compartir lo aprendido en estos diez años de participación en proyectos de investigación compartiendo algunas ideas que hay que tener presentes antes de optar a estos programas de innovación:
¿Dónde quiero estar en el futuro? Muchas empresas, cuando deciden participar por primera vez en este tipo de programas de investigación, tienen el siguiente enfoque: “Busco una idea para que la financien”. Sin embargo, el tiempo y la experiencia nos ha demostrado que no es la mejor opción. La apuesta por la I+D+i debe ser una inversión a medio y largo plazo, por lo que para acceder a proyectos de investigación lo primero que debe de preguntarse una empresa es: “¿Dónde quiero estar dentro de “X” años?” “¿Qué soluciones van a pedirnos nuestros clientes o usuarios en el futuro?” Una vez que sabemos dónde queremos estar a medio plazo es el momento de participar en estos programas y utilizar los recursos facilitados para alcanzar los objetivos fijados de antemano.
Empezar paso a paso. Antes de empezar a buscar proyectos europeos, existen programas de financiación nacional como aquellos promovidos por el Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI). Este tipo de proyectos son menos interesantes que los europeos desde el punto de vista económico, pero son una parte fundamental para empezar a trabajar la financiación de I+D+i de una empresa española. Cabe recordar que la tasa de éxito de los proyectos europeos es mucho más baja que los proyectos financiados por CDTI.
Crear una estrategia de I+D+i. Muchas compañías saben dónde quieren estar en el futuro pero no cuentan con una estrategia de I+D+i a medio y largo plazo detallada. La participación en programas de investigación ayuda a concretar ideas, ya que las instituciones que conceden la financiación solicitan un documento donde están especificados los objetivos, recursos, indicadores de rendimiento y presupuesto. La elaboración y presentación de esta memoria es una excelente oportunidad de reflexión para conocer cuánto cuesta y qué beneficios se espera obtener, contando con el valor añadido de tener la evaluación de un técnico independiente. Con este trabajo previo, las empresas podemos darnos cuenta de si la idea está realmente bien planteada para conseguir los objetivos previstos y planear la mejor estrategia de I+D+i posible.
¿Solos o acompañados? La oferta de programas de investigación permite que las empresas podamos acceder a financiación tanto para desarrollar proyectos en solitario como para hacerlos en colaboración con otros partners. Optar por un tipo u otro dependerá de las necesidades, objetivos y recursos de la empresa. No hay una opción mejor que otra. Las dos tienen sus ventajas e inconvenientes.
Acceso a nuevas redes y alianzas. Participar en proyectos de investigación en colaboración con otras entidades, sobre todo si son internacionales como es el caso de H2020, permite a las empresas compartir conocimientos técnicos y tener acceso a las instalaciones, equipos y datos de los países asociados participantes. En estos proyectos, además, es posible crear alianzas estratégicas con socios que perduran después del proyecto de investigación. Conseguir esta colaboración es muy valorado por la Comisión Europea.
Internacionalización y difusión. En un entorno global como el actual, la difusión de la I+D+i es fundamental para la creación de imagen de marca de las empresas y para la búsqueda de nuevas oportunidades de negocio.
Los programas marco de investigación y desarrollo tecnológico son un excelente recurso para aumentar la competitividad, el crecimiento y la generación de conocimiento para las empresas participantes y para sus países. Las empresas que desaprovechan su existencia pierden una gran oportunidad de mejora y de crecimiento.
