Predecir la dirección de la economía es tan difícil como predecir cómo evolucionará la pandemia. El pasado mes de mayo, McKinsey & Company presentaba hasta nueve escenarios diferentes sobre posibles curvas de recuperación basadas en la efectividad de las políticas y la respuesta del sector sanitario.

Algo tan simple como un portátil dañado o una actualización fallida del sistema operativo puede privar a los empleados del acceso a la red y la reparación puede llevar días.
Y todo esto, en un momento en que, por primera vez en más de una década, el gasto en TI no crecerá. Un reciente comunicado de prensa de Gartner predecía que el gasto mundial en TI alcanzará los 3,4 billones de dólares en 2020, con un decrecimiento del 8% respecto a 2019.
1. Costes. La pandemia ha obligado a las empresas a acelerar el ritmo de la transformación digital, agregando una nueva tensión en unos presupuestos de TI ya limitados. Como resultado, las compañías están reconsiderando sus inversiones en TI y buscan obtener más. Esto pasa por buscar oportunidades de consolidación para mantener menos sistemas más rentables, automatizar procesos para liberar al personal de TI o renovar el esquema de precios.
2. Liquidez. En el pasado, las infraestructuras se adquirían teniendo en cuenta las necesidades a tres o cinco años, pero en la situación actual se requiere que TI contenga al máximo el gasto para que este se realice solo cuando haya necesidad. Si bien algunas infraestructuras son versátiles (por ejemplo, servidores) y se pueden reutilizar fácilmente en otros proyectos o entornos, el almacenamiento adquirido para un proyecto no puede reutilizarse eficientemente para otras necesidades. La clave, pues, está en mantener la liquidez tanto como sea posible.
3. Time-to-market. Las unidades de negocio están bajo presión para conseguir nuevas fuentes de ingresos, nuevas oportunidades y mantener el negocio en funcionamiento. Cuando estas surjan, habrán de moverse rápido y llegar a tiempo al mercado. Esto crea un clima de incertidumbre para el departamento de TI, que necesita diferir las inversiones hasta que exista una clara necesidad y al mismo tiempo respaldar la velocidad que requieren las unidades de negocio para capitalizar las nuevas oportunidades.
4. Estructura de costes. Generalmente es menos costoso comprar infraestructura en modo CapEx (como inversión en capital). Sin embargo, la incertidumbre del mercado puede hacer que la flexibilidad de las compras en modo OpEx (como gasto operativo) sea más atractiva, ya que es imposible planificar la infraestructura con anticipación cuando no se sabe dónde se debe priorizar la minimización de los costes de infraestructura y cuáles son los de mayor riesgo, donde se deben evitar los compromisos a largo plazo. En estas circunstancias, se requiere una mayor elasticidad.
5. Personal y gastos de administración. Algunas empresas se verán obligadas a hacer recortes en sus equipos de TI, lo que aumentará la carga sobre los miembros restantes del equipo y, como resultado, ralentizará algunos procesos de negocio. Los responsables de TI tienen que actuar rápido y encontrar formas de minimizar la cantidad de puntos de gestión y compensar la reducción de personal. A través de soluciones más simples, con menores requisitos de administración, y mejores herramientas para la automatización, podrán mejorar el rendimiento.
1. Llevarlo todo a la nube pública. Migrar a la nube ofrece a las empresas la capacidad de distribuir el gasto, pagando solo por lo que se necesita y desescalando cuando sea necesario. Este «todo incluido» en la nube pública es una ventaja para las grandes empresas, que cuentan con economías de escala, pero no para las pequeñas y medianas empresas, que en muchos casos no pueden asumir su coste.
