La popularización del IoT está llevando la conectividad a todas las áreas de la sociedad. Más allá de su aplicación en consumo, donde se espera que alcance los 6.600 millones de dólares en 2023, su integración en la estructura empresarial o industrial puede generar múltiples beneficios, y se espera que en los próximos doce meses se amplíen los servicios relacionados con el Internet de las Cosas que se centran en su gestión en las organizaciones.
Sin embargo, en la actualidad no todas las compañías que han implantado proyectos IoT consiguen extraerle el mismo beneficio. Así lo señala una encuesta de McKinsey, realizada entre 300 negocios con programas de este tipo en fase de maduración, más allá de su despliegue como piloto. Según los datos de la consultora, solo la sexta parte de los encuestados detectan beneficios significativos de la aplicación de proyectos IoT, con impacto de ganancia en ingresos y ahorro de costes agregados de al menos 15%. Por el contrario, son también la sexta parte los que cifran este impacto en porcentajes inferiores al 5%. A los primeros se les denomina líderes, mientras que a los segundos se les califica como los rezagados en IoT.
Entre los que mantienen esta posición de liderazgo se perciben una serie de pautas comunes de actuación que pueden funcionar como consejos para los resposables de sacar adelante iniciativas de IoT en las empresas.
En primer lugar, los que logran mayor beneficio muestran más agresividad a la hora de abordar estos proyectos. Esta agresividad se traduce en que se implementan más casos de uso o aplicaciones concretas, una práctica positiva ya que se necesitan de media más empleos antes de lograr resultados consistentes. Los 15 primeros tienen menor impacto, pero este se va incrementando hasta alcanzar los 30 casos de uso, donde esa respuesta financiera comienza de nuevo a moderarse. También se le da una mayor importancia a la necesidad de cambiar procesos de negocio entre los que obtienen mejores resultados. Es también relevante el tipo de tecnología de los dispositivos empleados en la conexión, los ‘puntos finales’ de la red IoT. Entre las organizaciones con mejor respuesta, se detecta un mayor uso de tecnología avanzada, como realidad virtual o aumentada o drones.
Es también habitual entre los proyectos mejor posicionados que se mantenga una buena coordinación a lo largo de todo el proceso. Esto implica tener una perspectiva con visión de futuro, definiendo bien la iniciativa IoT y el valor que va a generar desde el principio. Además, es necesario implicar al equipo más allá de la parte tecnológica o de la responsabilidad del CIO, haciendo que se involucren e incluso lideren otros cargos de la junta directiva —especialmente al CEO—, y movilizando a toda la empresa para que aprendan las nuevas habilidades que requerirá este proyecto y colaboren entre departamentos.
A la hora de ejecutar las iniciativas IoT se requiere un enfoque práctico. Esto implica no proponerse grandes objetivos fuera de la oferta básica de la compañía, sino comenzar aplicando la conectividad al portfolio de servicios, productos y operaciones para enriquecerlo de cara al cliente. Tampoco se innova por innovar: no se gastan recursos en crear tecnologías avanzadas si estas se pueden conseguir más fácilmente a través de terceros. Se busca crear un ecosistema de socios que puedan dar soporte a las necesidades de forma ágil, práctica y eficiente. Por último, un aspecto fundamental de todo el proceso de implantación IoT es la ciberseguridad: la habilidad para gestionar amenazas y resolver vulnerabilidades es un factor clave para tener éxito en el despliegue de estas iniciativas.
