Caminamos hacia un mundo conectado. Las previsiones de la consultora Gartner hablan de al menos 20.400 millones de dispositivos IoT en dos años, para 2020. Por poner el dato en perspectiva, para ese año se espera que la población mundial roce los 7.800 millones de personas, de las cuales una parte no tendrán acceso a ningún tipo de elemento IoT. Ciñéndose únicamente a los datos de usuarios de dispositivos móviles de la GSMA, en 2017 se superaba la barrera de 5.000 millones de usuarios únicos de móviles, que se prevé que en 2025 habrá crecido hasta los 5.900 millones. Esto es, si en 2017 el 66% de habitantes del planeta tenía móvil, para 2025 será el 71%.
Toda esta multiplicación tecnológica deja su huella en la población. Un reciente estudio de la compañía de seguridad Kaspersky, realizado entre 11.250 usuarios de móvil de 15 países, pone de relieve los efectos de una mayor conectividad en los ciudadanos, que pasan por una consecuencia básica: la dependencia de los dispositivos. Un 22% de los encuestados equipara el estar conectado a tener acceso a comida, agua o un techo bajo el que alojarse. Uno de cada diez lleva siempre su aparato conectado encima, incluso al ir a dormir, a comer o al baño, y el 69% no sale de casa sin él, aunque sea para una salida corta. Casi la mitad, el 43%, lo primero que hacen por la mañana es consultarlo.
El vínculo con el dispositivo conectado puede repercutir en el estado de la persona. El 90% de los que han respondido el cuestionario dice que perderlo es una de las situaciones más estresantes por las que un usuario puede pasar. Un 88% se sentiría del mismo modo al perder un viaje en tren o avión, o al verse implicado en un pequeño accidente de coche. Y si tienen que elegir, el 23% lo tiene claro: preferirían verse desnudos en público que tener que pasar sin su smartphone, tablet o aparato conectado.
Estas implicaciones llegan al punto de ciertas prácticas de riesgo para la propia seguridad física. Por ejemplo, una de cada cuatro personas encuestadas reconoce haber mirado el teléfono cruzando la calle, y una de cada cinco lo ha hecho yendo en caminos no conocidos o peligrosos.
Uno de los puntos curiosos del estudio es que, pese a considerarla de vital importancia, la gente no siempre se toma las molestias necesarias para contar con esa conectividad. Solo un tercio de los encuestados reconocen mantener un control sobre los niveles de carga de batería, y uno de cada cinco comprueba regularmente el estado de su dispositivo.
Como contrapunto a las implicaciones menos positivas, el estudio pone de relieve que las máximas preocupaciones que manifiestan los encuestados sobre quedarse sin conectividad son en relación a la gente que les importa. El 51% dice que, en el caso de no poder acceder a una red, se sienten intranquilos porque la gente más cercana a ellos se preocupe. Para un 45%, el problema es que les suceda algo a sus seres queridos y no puedan contactarles. Las consecuencias sobre quedarse sin conectividad también van en esta línea: la más citada es causarle inquietud a estas personas, lo que puede llevar a problemas con ellos. Le siguen perderse contenidos online, oportunidades de trabajo o educación, o que se les pase una cita.
