Por el momento podemos decir que IoT está evolucionando, en parte, gracias a la aparición de las redes públicas de IoT, que permiten la comunicación entre máquinas en entornos extensos, no sólo en hogares. Antes para esto era necesario montar una red propia, privada, que diera soporte a esta comunicación, pero ahora son los propios operadores los que están ayudando a crear esa red pública. Por un lado, que permita dar cobertura a aplicaciones de IoT, y por otro ayudando a avanzar en la creación de unos estándares de comunicación, algo que no existía y que es muy necesario si queremos que se produzca la auténtica eclosión de IoT.

Los principales operadores del mercado están desplegando diversas tecnologías, como LTE-M (Orange) o NB-yate (Vodafone), que formarán parte del próximo estándar 5G. Estas redes NB-IoT y LTE-M con licencia ya brindan conectividad de confianza a millones de dispositivos en todo el mundo, y continuarán siendo un componente fundamental de nuestro futuro 5G dando paso a una era de IoT masiva.
Estudios recientes hablan de IoT como una oportunidad fundamental de desarrollo a escala mundial que podría mejorar las vidas de millones de personas y acelerar de forma espectacular los avances, incluso para lograr los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible planteados por las Naciones Unidas. También es cierto que el 85% de las organizaciones, tanto públicas como privadas, tiene previsto de cara al año 2019 implementar iniciativas de IoT, algo que suena alentador y que nos lleva a pensar que va a formar parte de nuestras vidas en todos sus ámbitos.
Lo cierto es que las empresas que implementen soluciones de IoT a lo largo de este año tendrán una clara ventaja sobre sus competidores a la hora de desarrollar sus capacidades digitales. 3 de cada 4 empresas coinciden en que la transformación digital es imposible sin el IoT, según registró el Barómetro de IoT 2017/2018 publicado por Vodafone, y eso es algo que demuestra la relevancia que está tomando en el mercado. IoT empieza a entenderse como un impulsor de mejoras en todos los negocios. Las empresas de seguros, automoción, utilities, gestión de residuos, mobiliario urbano, e incluso moda o alimentación, ya están empezando a utilizar IoT para reducir el coste de sus operaciones, mejorar la productividad de sus empleados, crear nuevas fuentes de ingresos, y por supuesto para mejorar la experiencia del cliente. Cuanto más avancemos en la implementación de este tipo de tecnologías, más beneficios encontraremos.
Gartner estima que para 2020 superaremos los 20.000 millones de dispositivos conectados de IoT, y esto nos da una idea de la cantidad de datos que estos dispositivos van a generar, y que deberemos aprender a gestionar. Esta gestión implica no sólo su tratamiento y buen uso, sino también la seguridad que debemos poner en marcha para evitar un mal uso de ellos. Las redes IoT van a ser prioritarias si queremos que este nuevo universo consiga su verdadero objetivo. Por eso todos debemos trabajar para llegar a él.
