Esta tecnología emergente es capaz de fusionar espacios físicos y digitales dando como resultado sistemas dotados de potencial apto para transformar un gran número de industrias.
En el terreno digital existe un gran linaje de tecnologías y herramientas que se emplean para modelar el mundo físico entre las que se incluyen aplicaciones de dibujo, diagramas y programas de CAD. También se dan diferentes maneras de utilizar la tecnología ‘twin’ para modelar sistemas presentes en el mundo real como simuladores de gestión financiera, sistemas de meteorología o de tráfico, con la finalidad de realizar modelos de predicción.
En el momento en que se fusionan estas dos capacidades – la representación digital de un sistema físico con un modelo que simula condiciones de salida basadándose en las entradas realizadas desde el mundo real–, aparece el gemelo digital. Un gemelo digital, o digital twin, permite validar el sistema virtual a partir de una extensa variedad de situaciones procedentes de la realidad.
Cada vez más ingenieros emplean gemelos digitales en industrias tales como cadenas de producción, construcción, energía, transporte, medicina y ciencia, entre otras, para desarrollar productos y validarlos a través de plataformas procedentes del mundo físico. Esto puede sonar a ciencia ficción, pero los avances alcanzados en aprendizaje automático, modelado de sistemas, sensores IoT, plataformas de streaming de datos, tecnologías de simulación e infraestructuras de nube, consiguen que los gemelos digitales se estén convirtiendo en elementos más prevalentes cada día.
Los expertos hacen alusión a dos maneras de utilizar los gemelos digitales: para funciones de realidad aumentada, y también en la visualización de perspectivas de sistemas completos en tiempo real. Las aplicaciones de realidad aumentada disponen de una gran cantidad de casos de uso, y pueden ser de gran ayuda en procedimientos de simulación antes de que una persona realice una implementación en el mundo real, o bien cuando la seguridad humana resulta ser un factor crítico.
Asimismo, existe un modo más expansivo de emplear gemelos digitales que consiste en la integración de aplicaciones que puedan enlazar diversos gemelos digitales en un mismo entorno, para construir potentes modelos que predicción que van a proporcionar visiones completas de las infraestructuras en tiempo real como, por ejemplo, el estado del tráfico en una ciudad.
En otras palabras, se podría decir que el gemelo digital de una smart city representa una agregación formada a través del establecimiento de enlaces entre gemelos digitales procedentes de edificios, transportes, servicios de las Administraciones Públicas, y otro tipo de sistemas.
El modelado de comportamientos y escenarios futuros representa otra gran baza que es capaz de solventar un gemelo digital, ya que los digital twins permiten establecer trazabilidades entre comportamientos pasados, proporcionar conocimientos más profundos del presente y, lo más importante, resultan de extraordinaria ayuda a la hora de predecir e influir futuros comportamientos. Asimismo, cada vez más equipos de ingeniería emplean gemelos digitales para evaluar y optimizar diseños orientados a los sistemas de producción, ya que permiten que las empresas validen múltiples diseños en el entorno digital antes de ponerlos producción en el mundo real.
