“Wifi 6 no es sólo la próxima generación de Wifi, ni tampoco una serie de mejoras en términos de rendimiento y cobertura que optimizan todas las implementaciones existentes, sino un nuevo conjunto de capacidades que la industria puede utilizar para abordar nuevas oportunidades para consumidores, empresas, ciudades y el internet de las cosas (IoT)». ¿Te suena? Es casi el mismo discurso que se ha utilizado para presentar las ventajas del 5G. Ambas tecnologías van a cambiar las reglas del juego y darle una vuelta de tuerca a la forma en la que operan las industrias. Pero ¿hay que elegir entre las dos?
Desde algunos foros móviles se ha barajado la posibilidad de que la tecnología 3G, 4G y ahora 5G haga innecesario el Wifi. Sin embargo, curiosamente, esto no ha sucedido. Todo lo contrario. Según la Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), “esta tecnología costo-efectiva, junto con un ecosistema abierto, y las actualizaciones que aseguran la compatibilidad con versiones anteriores para todos los dispositivos ha creado un mercado increíblemente exitoso, que el año pasado vio el despliegue de más de 3.000 millones de nuevos dispositivos Wifi». Y su crecimiento continúa siendo exponencial, aunque paralelamente también se están haciendo grandes inversiones en 5G. De hecho, WBA considera que Wifi 6 y 5G van a ser «buenos amigos» que se complementan entre sí.
Por ahora, el Wifi sigue siendo la tecnología más utilizada en el sector empresarial y se usa en numerosos casos en el ecosistema IoT, ya que los estándares de Wifi permiten la conexión de una amplia gama de dispositivos y los costes de implementación son relativamente bajos. Es más, cuando se combina con la arquitectura de red LoRaWAN, puede crear nuevas oportunidades de negocio, por ejemplo, con edificios inteligentes, la gestión hotelera inteligente, la conectividad residencial o el transporte inteligente. Y no es poca cosa.
Pero, por supuesto, también tiene limitaciones, lo que ha propiciado el desarrollo de nuevas especificaciones, como 802.11ah y 802.11ax. Afortunadamente, hace ya un par de años, Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), la organización sin ánimo de lucro que promueve la tecnología Wifi y certifica que los productos se ajusten a ciertas normas de interoperabilidad, decidió dejar atrás la nomenclatura con números y letras y simplificar las cosas. Así, 802.11ax es ahora Wifi 6. Tal cual.
Las ventajas del nuevo Wifi 6 son claras: mayor velocidad, mejor funcionamiento cuando hay muchos dispositivos conectados a la misma red y mejor eficiencia energética, lo cual es crucial para IoT. Esta eficiencia energética es posible gracias a una tecnología conocida como Target Wake Time (TWT), que permite a los dispositivos determinar cuándo despertarse para enviar o recibir datos, de modo que los puntos de acceso Wifi pueden conservar significativamente la vida útil de la batería.
En diciembre de 2019, Wireless Broadband Alliance confirmó el éxito de una prueba de fase uno de la infraestructura Wifi 6 en un entorno exigente: una fábrica aeroespacial. El test, que incluía aplicaciones de transmisión de vídeo en 4K, transferencias de archivos a gran escala, mensajes y comunicaciones de voz y vídeo, así como las primeras pruebas con un sensor IoT en un entorno de realidad mixta, fue el primero de este tipo en el mundo. Evidentemente, también forma parte del programa de desarrollo de Wifi 6 de la WBA. En este sentido, la alianza proporciona algunas pautas para una implementación inteligente de Wifi 6, que pueden garantizar que los operadores, las empresas y los proveedores eviten algunos problemas recurrentes con esta tecnología.
Volviendo a la pregunta inicial sobre si la industria tiene que elegir entre 5G y Wifi 6,Wireless Broadband Alliance considera que puesto que la sociedad depende cada vez más de una conectividad de datos rápida y confiable, «para la industria será importante la convergencia (a nivel de red y no sólo de acceso) entre el estándar 3GPP 5G y Wifi, para que las capacidades únicas y complementarias de ambas redes de acceso de radio (RAN) se aprovechen para proporcionar servicios de red sin interrupciones.”«Teniendo en cuenta que una cantidad significativa del tráfico de datos desde teléfonos inteligentes utiliza un acceso Wifi, esto conducirá a una mejor experiencia de usuario y creará nuevas oportunidades tanto para proveedores Wifi como para proveedores móviles”, añade WBA.
