El último año ha supuesto un desafío sin precedentes para un gran número de sectores y profesionales que han dedicado todo su esfuerzo a buscar soluciones que nos permitan salir de la complicada situación que ha traído la pandemia a todo el planeta. Hablamos de científicos, médicos, investigadores, pero también de ingenieros informáticos, analistas de datos o especialistas en ingeniería artificial que, en la sombra, han trabajado durante meses para encontrar las herramientas que permitan a los gobiernos de todo el mundo gestionar esta crisis mundial con las mejores garantías.
Este es el caso de la iniciativa ValenciaA4Covid19, un proyecto coordinado por Nuria Oliver, comisaria de la Presidencia de la Generalitat Valenciana, y J. Alberto Conejero, director del Departamento de Matemáticas Aplicadas de la Universitat Politècnica de València, que ha obtenido el primer puesto del premio de la Fundación X-Prize, en la categoría ‘Respuesta a la Pandemia’, organizado con el apoyo de la compañía de servicios profesionales tecnológicos Cognizant.
El concurso, de cuatro meses de duración y alcance mundial, ha sido diseñado para aprovechar el poder de los datos y la IA con el objetivo de dotar a los responsables políticos, autoridades sanitarias y líderes empresariales del conocimiento necesario para implementar medidas de seguridad pública que ayuden a mantener abiertas las economías locales al tiempo que minimizan los brotes del virus hasta que las vacunas se generalicen.
Para ello, el desafío instó a los equipos a desarrollar sistemas de IA, basados en los datos, capaces de predecir de forma precisa las tasas de transmisión de la COVID-19 y prescribir medidas de intervención y mitigación que, tras ser probadas en escenarios hipotéticos, demuestren reducir el ratio así como los impactos negativos en la economía.
“El reto era ser capaz de crear un predictor del número de casos de coronavirus en más de 230 países y regiones de todo el mundo a 180 días en el futuro y teniendo en cuenta las diferentes medidas adoptadas por cada uno de los países”, apunta Nuria Oliver. Una vez pasada esta primera fase, los equipos clasificados “tuvimos que hacer un prescriptor de medidas políticas a adoptar para estos países y regiones, en base a un coste, tanto económico como social, asociado a cada una de las posibles medidas que dichos países pueden adoptar (intervenciones educativas, cierres de fronteras, cancelación de eventos, reuniones familiares, etc.)”.
La iniciativa ValenciaIA4covid19, compuesta por un equipo de 14 personas de especialidades muy diversas (estudiantes, investigadores o catedráticos de diferentes universidades e instituciones), lleva colaborando con el Gobierno valenciano desde marzo del pasado año para utilizar la ciencia de los datos en la lucha contra la COVID-19. “Llevábamos meses trabajando para la Generalitat Valenciana en la toma de decisiones a través de análisis de datos de IA en cuatro áreas: análisis de movilidad humana, desarrollo de modelos epidemiológicos, modelos predictivos y una gran encuesta ciudadana llamada covid 19 Impact Survey y cuando supimos de este reto, a través de una comunidad de IA, nos dimos cuenta de que estaba muy alineado con nuestro trabajo y, aunque los tiempos con los que contábamos eran muy justos, el equipo se comprometió y trabajó muy duro”, apunta Oliver.
Al final, añade, “nuestra motivación era poder ir más allá de lo que habíamos estado haciendo y expandir nuestro trabajo a todo el planeta. Nunca nos habíamos presentado a una competición como equipo y, aunque fue una prueba de fuego, nos hemos dado cuenta de que más allá de nuestro gran conocimiento y expertise, nuestra fortaleza ha sido la calidad humana, algo de lo que me siento muy orgullosa”.
De a cara al futuro, XPRIZE y Cognizant, junto con la Unión Internacional de Telecomunicaciones (ITU), quieren ampliar estos esfuerzos más allá de la competición para crea una plataforma pública y un ecosistema que fomente el uso de los datos y la IA, a la vez que posibilita la aportación de expertos y líderes de opinión de la comunidad global de salud pública.
Según Manuel Ávalos, director general de Cognizant para el sur de Europa, para la compañía, apoyar estos retos supone “una aportación a la sociedad en la que trabajamos y vivimos de cara a afrontar el que puede ser el mayor reto humano, económico y social en una generación”. Además, “todos los equipos que han participado en el desafío han utilizado el sistema de Inteligencia Artificial Evolutiva de Cognizant como premisa de partida. Que nuestro modelo se haya convertido en la inspiración del desafío de “Respuesta a la pandemia”, nos llena de orgullo y confirma la relevancia de contar con herramientas que nos ayuden a tomar las decisiones correctas y realizar las correcciones adecuadas, en el momento oportuno, tanto para salvar vidas como para atenuar el impacto en la esfera social y económica.
En el caso del proyecto ganador, después de cuatro meses de duro trabajo, en los que el descanso no ha tenido lugar, Oliver espera que “este sea el comienzo y no el fin”. Así, los siguientes pasos se dirigen a crear una plataforma con todos los datos del proyecto disponibles y a la que puedan tener acceso todos los países. “Es importante entender que es el comienzo de una transformación profunda de la manera en la que se toman decisiones para que estén basadas en la evidencia, representada por los datos, a través del conocimiento científico”. Pero, de acuerdo con Oliver, no podemos olvidar que todo esto no sería una realidad si no fuera por el gran talento que existe. “El talento está en todas partes, aunque a veces nos falte ponerlo en valor, puede estar en cualquier lugar y hay que darle la oportunidad para que emerja”.
