El informe revela que, aunque los directivos consideran que la IA representa una oportunidad clave en el negocio, muchos están cada vez más preocupados por los riesgos estratégicos asociados con la IA.
Titulado «Winning With AI: Pioneers Combine Strategy, Organizational Behavior, and Technology», el informe está basado en una encuesta a más de 2.500 directivos y en 17 entrevistas a líderes y expertos. Los datos revelan que:
Nueve de cada diez directivos están de acuerdo en que la IA representa una oportunidad de negocio para su compañía.
Por el momento, siete de cada diez compañías aluden a un impacto mínimo o nulo de la IA. El 90% ha realizado al menos una inversión relacionada con inteligencia artificial, pero menos del 40% afirman haber logrado ingresos gracias a la IA en los últimos tres años.
En 2019, el 45% percibió algún riesgo relacionado con la IA, un aumento del 37% respecto a 2017.
“El informe confirma que la inteligencia artificial es una temática relevante para los líderes de todas las industrias. Sin embargo, a pesar de que algunas compañías ya han logrado importantes avances, la mayoría aún tiene dificultades para generar valor con la inteligencia artificial «, apunta Sam Ransbotham uno de los autores del informe. “¿Cómo pueden los líderes corporativos aprovechar las oportunidades, gestionar los riesgos y minimizar las dificultades asociadas con la IA? Son incógnitas cada vez más relevantes que las empresas necesitan responder para avanzar en la creación de valor asociada a la IA”.
El informe revela que las empresas que hoy están logrando crear valor a través de sus iniciativas de IA presentan cinco comportamientos en común:
Integran sus iniciativas de IA con la estrategia de negocio. El 88% de los encuestados que aluden al valor de la IA en sus estrategias de negocio integran sus iniciativas de IA con su estrategia digital.
Unifican sus iniciativas de IA con sus estrategias de transformación. Para generar valor de negocio mediante la IA, los directivos deben ser capaces de obtener datos de los diferentes departamentos e iniciativas e integrarlos en grupos de trabajo estableciendo una colaboración interfuncional.
Asumen grandes riesgos, priorizando el crecimiento de los ingresos sobre la reducción de los costes. Los encuestados que destacan únicamente la reducción de los costes como resultado de las iniciativas de IA son menos optimistas sobre la posibilidad de lograr mayores ahorros con la IA que aquellos que han visto un crecimiento en los ingresos. Solo el 44% de los que han logrado reducir costes esperan los mismos resultados en los próximos cinco años, mientras que el 72% de los que han aumentado ingresos esperan que ese éxito continúe en el mismo período.
Alinean el desarrollo de IA con su uso. Más allá de las herramientas, los sistemas o los procesos para implementar la inteligencia artificial, estas compañías se aseguran de que los empleados usen soluciones que emplean IA, puedan medir los resultados y sean conscientes del valor generado.
Evitan la «trampa tecnológica». Las compañías que perciben que aumentan valor gracias a las iniciativas de IA reconocen que no es solo una oportunidad tecnológica, sino también una iniciativa estratégica que requiere inversiones relacionadas con la captación y retención del talento, nuevas formas de trabajar y gestión del cambio. Las compañías con iniciativas de IA supervisadas por el CIO, cuyo equipo suele gestionar las iniciativas tecnológicas, son casi un 50% menos propenso a ver el valor que la IA puede aportar.
«A medida que los líderes empresariales desarrollan una estrategia con IA, el talento es un problema complejo sin una respuesta fácil. Las capacidades que requerirán los trabajadores del futuro diferirán notablemente de las actuales, no solo para el número relativamente reducido de trabajadores que desarrollan soluciones de inteligencia artificial, sino aún más importante para un número mucho mayor de trabajadores que utilizarán soluciones de inteligencia artificial directa o indirectamente, » afirma el co-autor del informe Sam Ransbotham.
Los resultados del informe en relación al desarrollo de talento revelan que el 65% de los encuestados obtienen valor relacionado con el negocio en el uso de la IA cuando utilizan un enfoque múltiple: construyen equipos internos y dependen menos de proveedores externos; importan selectivamente talento con experiencia en IA para roles de liderazgo técnico; y forman a sus empleados actuales en capacidades relacionadas con la comprensión y gestión de la inteligencia artificial (upskilling).
En España, Llorenç Mitjavila socio responsable de BCG Gamma en Iberia, considera que existe un círculo virtuoso para el desarrollo de IA. “El acceso al talento, la consolidación de España como un hub tecnológico y de innovación, y una cobertura mediática eminentemente positiva, contribuyen a un entusiasmo generalizado por la Inteligencia Artificial. Muchas de las grandes empresas españolas están invirtiendo en soluciones de IA, y tenemos un ecosistema vibrante de start-ups basadas en estas tecnologías que está consiguiendo atraer inversiones muy significativas”.
«La IA es una oportunidad estratégica importante, que conlleva riesgos estratégicos si las empresas no actúan con cuidado. Ya existe una brecha entre ganadores y perdedores, y esta brecha aumentará en los próximos años. Para obtener valor, la tecnología y los algoritmos no son suficientes. Las compañías deben integrar la IA en su estrategia corporativa y en sus procesos. Esto suele resultar mucho más difícil que la propia tecnología en sí misma y conseguir hacerlo con éxito requiere nuevas formas de trabajar diferentes del enfoque requerido para obtener valor de iniciativas tecnológicas», concluye Shervin Khodabandeh, otro de los autores del informe.
