Los Red Team han llegado a Europa para quedarse y sentar una base dogmática en el mundo de la ciberseguridad. Se conoce así a los grupos de ‘seguridad ofensiva’ que tratan de introducirse en empresas y organismos con el objetivo de saber sus puntos débiles y mejorar sus cualidades de protección. Para ello, tiran de cualquier estrategia y herramienta, incluso de ingeniería social, a fin de que la empresa que los contrata pueda conocer mejor sus ‘órganos internos’. Tal está creciendo el interés en esta línea estratégica de actuación que, según palabras de Ignacio Cea, director corporativo de estrategia e innovación tecnológica de Bankia, la Unión Europea ya está tratando de legislarla e incluso de “obligar” a las compañías a contemplarla mediante distintos métodos y consejos. De hecho, la propia entidad financiera ya creó su propio Red Team hace un año debido a la exposición a la que está sometido el sector en el que opera, tal y como ha explicado el directivo en el marco del evento que la firma ha organizado junto con InnoTec para aportar un poco de luz sobre estos grupos de expertos.
La motivación de estos equipos pasa por un contexto actual en el que tanto empresas como estados y ciudadanos se someten a una cantidad ingente de ataques. Es más, aluden constantemente a frases militares del antiguo militar chino Sun Tzu como “si quieres la paz prepárate para la guerra” o “solo cuando conoces el detalle de la condición del terreno puedes maniobrar,” para justificar el entorno en que se mueven. Sin embargo, ha dicho Cea, no es fácil tomar la decisión de crear un Red Team para que busque las vulnerabilidades de tu propia empresa y se enfrente a los Blue Team (grupos de estrategia defensiva). “Pero hemos visto que también nos sirve como herramienta de concienciación que se puede exportar a todos los empleados”.
Así actúan
Para que estas prácticas tengan sentido, las empresas tienen que cumplir una serie de precauciones. Por ejemplo, ha explicado Enrique Domínguez, director de estrategia de ciberseguridad de InnoTec, solo las personas que contratan estos servicios en las compañías deben saber que el Red Team va a actuar. En sus primeros pasos, este grupo trata de conocer todas las vulnerabilidades de la firma mediante distintas técnicas. Una vez sabidas, se hace visible para que el equipo de defensa de la organización pueda interceptarlos y protegerse para así calibrar cuál es el estado de la protección de la firma. “La mayoría de las debilidades que encontramos tienen que ver con fallos muy básicos, como la segmentación de la red. El primer consejo que damos es que todo lo que se da por hecho y parece sencillo hay que hacerlo bien porque puede ser una puerta de entrada importante”, ha señalado.
Durante la jornada ha participado el Centro Criptológico Nacional (CCN), un organismo defensivo por antonomasia y que no practica este tipo de ataques. “Nuestros Red Team son los actores patrocinados por estados”, ha indicado el portavoz. En cualquier caso, ha dicho, lo primero que hace el organismo, cuando alguien les pide ayuda, es saber en qué punto de la seguridad están. Además, ha incidido, el conocimiento del adversario a nivel táctico, técnico y operacional así como su objetivo, son esenciales para mejorar las capacidades defensivas.
