La tecnología es una buena impulsora para el sector del cuidado de la salud. La tecnología a menudo se utiliza para reducir los costes de mano de obra y mejorar la productividad, en lugar de desarrollar nuevos tratamientos, muchas empresas de atención médica optan por adquirir empresas. Los posibles efectos secundarios de las nuevas empresas de tecnología adquiridas ofrecen una mayor rentabilidad y ahorro en TI.
Pero, ¿qué compañías de tecnología hacen la mejor medicina?
La consultora de tecnología West Monroe Partners le preguntó a 100 ejecutivos corporativos e inversionistas que operan en el área de la salud qué dos tecnologías de atención médica consideraban los objetivos de adquisición más atractivos. Aquí están las ocho respuestas más populares.
Tecnología móvil
La mitad de todos los encuestados mencionó la tecnología móvil, y eso tiene sentido dado el énfasis que los fabricantes de teléfonos, como Apple, están poniendo en la recopilación de información de salud de sus usuarios y devolviéndola a los investigadores.
Los teléfonos ya pueden monitorizar la frecuencia cardíaca de los pacientes y rastrear su actividad gracias a dispositivos como Fitbit, Apple Watch o Samsung Gear. Pronto los teléfonos también podrán monitorizar la presión sanguínea. Pero el potencial de las aplicaciones móviles no se limita a controlar los signos vitales: también hay margen para aumentar la eficiencia en elaborar las recetas, reserva de citas, y tal vez incluso en la realización de consultas de forma remota.
Análisis de datos
Una de las grandes ventajas de los registros médicos electrónicos (EMR) es que transforman la pila tradicional de garabatos en un lago de datos que es fácil de buscar y analizar, pero ¿cuántas empresas realmente lo están haciendo? Reúna los EMR con los datos de salud generados por el paciente de las aplicaciones móviles y las posibilidades de generar información a partir de los datos son aún mayores. Pero también hay datos útiles para ser analizados dentro de la industria del cuidado de la salud, como descubrió la compañía farmacéutica Merck a través de su sistema ERP.
Blockchain
Las aplicaciones construidas en blockchains realmente pueden curar algunos de los males de la industria del cuidado de la salud. Al crear una base de datos distribuida e inmutable de la información de los proveedores de atención médica, pueden ayudar a que los datos salgan de las bases de datos propietarias de los proveedores y a un formato interoperable. Solo eso podría reducir los costes y acelerar el tratamiento para muchos. También hay aplicaciones en contratos de salud inteligentes y secuenciación genómica.
Wearables
Los sensores y rastreadores portátiles fueron nombrados por una cuarta parte de los encuestados sobre qué tecnologías querían adquirir los ejecutivos de atención médica. Si bien su uso estuvo plagado inicialmente por un exceso de datos que simplemente no se analizaban, eso está cambiando con la disponibilidad de nuevas herramientas de análisis. Pero es importante averiguar qué quiere hacer con todos esos datos antes de comenzar a recopilarlos.
Herramientas de telesalud
Con la medicina cada vez más especializada, a veces es difícil para los pacientes encontrar un experto local en lo que sea que le aflige. Ahí es donde entran las herramientas de telesalud. Ya sea que se trate de una simple videoconferencia entre el paciente y el cuidador, o un dispositivo que proporciona información de diagnóstico de forma remota, la TI puede distanciarse del médico más cercano. Vinculado con la tecnología móvil y los wearables, la telemedicina tiene un gran potencial.
Robótica
Mientras que los robots con bisturí pueden ser la peor pesadilla para algunas personas, también pueden ser el futuro de la cirugía: no se cansan, son fáciles de esterilizar, y pueden trabajar a través de diminutas incisiones que estarían más allá de la capacidad de los cirujanos humanos. Pero todavía están afectados por los altos costes operativos y en la mayoría de los casos, la necesidad de un cirujano por lo que muchos hospitales aún no pueden pagarlos. Aún así, los avances en inteligencia artificial como la visión artificial y el aprendizaje profundo pueden mejorar la capacidad de los robots quirúrgicos para determinar qué hacer sin la necesidad de un humano.
Inteligencia artificial
Solo uno de cada seis encuestados sobre los objetivos de adquisición de tecnología dijo que considerarían comprar una compañía de inteligencia artificial, de los cuales casi todos estaban interesados en la robótica. IBM ha estado promocionando Watson AI como una ayuda para seleccionar el tratamiento del cáncer y en radiología, pero también tiene un rol para la IA en actividades más mundanas como servicio al cliente.
Realidad virtual y realidad aumentada
Los cirujanos pueden no estar listos para entregar su bisturí a un robot controlado por IA, pero pueden beneficiarse de la IA de otras maneras. La empresa francesa Qwant está utilizando la visión artificial para superponer imágenes médicas 3D en los cuerpos de los pacientes en el quirófano. Esta herramienta de realidad aumentada les permite a los cirujanos visualizar lo que hay detrás del tejido al que están cortando, evitando los vasos sanguíneos o las membranas delicadas. La realidad virtual también se puede utilizar para diagnosticar y tratar pacientes, o para formar personal médico.
