La ciberseguridad vuelve a estar, un año más, en la mente –y en la planificación estratégica del próximo año- de la inmensa mayoría de los directores de tecnología de empresas de todos los tamaños con NIS2 y la protección de la identidad como desafíos más acuciantes. El mundo digital está ampliando sus horizontes cada vez más, desde el IoT hasta la Inteligencia Artificial, convirtiendo a la ciberseguridad en una pieza clave en cualquier engranaje. Y mientras aceptamos los desarrollos de este año, 2024 promete nuevas tendencias y patrones relacionados con las ciberamenazas que llevarán a la industria hacia nuevas direcciones.
Nueva legislación sobre ciberseguridad
El primero de ellos será el impacto que la directiva NIS2 pueda tener en las empresas que operan en la UE. Se trata, sin duda, de un paso muy importante dado por las instituciones públicas para impulsar una ciberseguridad común en toda la Unión. Sin embargo, la legislación promete doce meses de confusión para las empresas clasificadas como de infraestructuras críticas básicas que deben cumplir con la nueva regulación. Se espera que esta norma entre en vigor el 17 de octubre, por lo que será interesante ver cómo cada país transpone la directiva a las respectivas legislaciones nacionales.
Muchas empresas esperarán también un botón mágico que les permita cumplir con la ley sin mucho esfuerzo, pero NIS2 no es solo tecnología, también son prácticas y operativas. El impacto de esta norma estará correlacionado con la madurez con la que se encuentren las estrategias de seguridad de cada organización, ya que la puesta en marcha requerirá de importantes esfuerzos, sobre todo si no se han tenido en cuenta hasta ahora altos niveles de protección. Para los que cuenten con unas políticas de ciberseguridad avanzadas e innovadoras, el impacto será prácticamente nulo. En cualquier caso, 2024 será un período de adaptación en las prácticas de ciberseguridad de las empresas de la UE.
Compartir información sobre incidentes
El cambio cultural hacia la inteligencia compartida y colaborativa se convertirá también el próximo año en la piedra angular para muchas empresas. Ahora mismo, nos encontramos con una brecha real entre la extensión y la efectividad a la hora de compartir información posterior a un ciberataque, debido, especialmente, al rechazo de las víctimas por una posible estigmatización o sentimiento de culpabilidad. Esta situación repercute negativamente en la comprensión global de las nuevas amenazas, pero también impide el desarrollo de mecanismos realmente robustos para la defensa de las organizaciones.
Al reconocer este problema, se espera que los gobiernos locales y los organismos reguladores desempeñen un papel fundamental en la nueva forma de pensar sobre el intercambio de inteligencia en 2024. Al hacer cumplir políticas que fomenten o exijan el intercambio de información sobre incidentes de ciberseguridad y de inteligencia sobre amenazas, el objetivo es fomentar un entorno más colaborativo y un ambiente que se centre menos en culpar a las víctimas. Este cambio no se trata sólo de cumplimiento; consiste en cultivar una mentalidad en la que las organizaciones vean el intercambio de inteligencia como una responsabilidad común y vital para la ciberresiliencia colectiva.
A medida que avanzamos hacia una cultura que priorice la protección, la formación y la prevención por encima de la culpabilización, podremos esperar un frente más unido contra las ciberamenazas que beneficie tanto a organizaciones como a individuos. Se debe hacer hincapié en aprender de los incidentes, crear conciencia sobre las amenazas emergentes y diseñar colectivamente estrategias para prevenir ataques similares, creando así un ecosistema digital más seguro e informado.
Incremento continuado de los ataques relacionados con ingeniería social
Los ataques basados en identidad seguirán siendo la principal arma de los ciberdelincuentes en 2024 por el simple hecho de que se ha demostrado que es el ataque más eficiente. Según un estudio de CrowdStrike, el 80 % de las brechas ocurren a partir de identidades comprometidas. Los delincuentes no solo buscan ya credenciales válidas sino que, sobre todo, persiguen cualquier forma de autorización e identificación -credenciales débiles de víctimas que han realizado compras en el mercado negro, por ejemplo-, y las utilizan para desarrollar sus labores de ingeniería social y para realizar ataques de phishing.
La ingeniería social es lo más destacado en este punto, ya que las empresas necesitan esforzarse por educar a sus empleados a la hora de ser conscientes de cuándo están siendo engañados. Esto hace que la protección de la identidad sea la protección más crítica que las empresas deberían tratar de fortalecer en 2024. De lo contrario, los delincuentes atacarán continuamente este punto débil y, en la mayoría de los casos, tendrán éxito.
Colaboración entre equipos
Todos estos desafíos hacen más importante que nunca que las líneas entre los equipos de IT y de seguridad se difuminen, ya que existe una verdadera oportunidad para mejorar la resistencia corporativa con la convergencia de estos dos departamentos que, tradicionalmente, han operado de forma independiente.
La cooperación entre las dos áreas permite la combinación de expertos que pueden luchar juntos contra las amenazas más sofisticadas. Además, la aparición de plataformas de ciberseguridad diseñadas específicamente para el uso en departamentos de IT es prueba de ello. Ese tipo de plataformas han sido diseñadas para integrar la seguridad en las operaciones técnicas y ofrecen análisis en tiempo real y respuestas automatizadas a cualquier incidente de seguridad, reduciendo, por tanto, el tiempo de respuesta y mejorando la seguridad global de la compañía.
En definitiva, no es ninguna sorpresa afirmar que las empresas que prioricen la ciberseguridad estarán mejor colocadas ante las amenazas emergentes. Las inversiones en seguridad avanzada –especialmente en cifrado, autenticación multifactor, análisis en tiempo real de amenazas-, pero también los esfuerzos por alcanzar una cultura de concienciación entre los profesionales de la organización serán claves para una defensa adecuada contra cualquier ataque.
