El año pasado los expertos vaticinaron que durante 2020 las mafias que atacan con ransomware pasarían de encriptar los archivos de sus víctimas a también robarlos. El pronóstico se cumplió en cuestión de mesesy esta práctica ya habitual en todo el mundo de la ciberseguridad se ha cobrado varias víctimas, entre ellas firmas españolas como Adif o Mapfre.
Business Insider España vuelve a hacer este ejercicio de prospectiva en un escenario ahora mucho más convulso: 2020, año de pandemia, la crisis del coronavirus todavía no ha remitido y todo el mundo se ha adaptado como ha podido a nuevas formas de trabajo en remoto. 2021 puede marcar un antes y un después en el ámbito de los ataques informáticos.
Al menos eso creen varios expertos como Ricardo Maté, director general de Sophos Iberia; Hervé Lambert, gerente de Operaciones de Cliente Global en Panda Security; y José Rosell, socio director de S2 Grupo.
Para recopilar estas tendencias, también se han tenido en cuenta las opiniones de investigadores de ciberseguridad en Kaspersky; Ariel Jungheit, David Emm y Costin Raiu, que brindaron sus declaraciones a Business Insider en Estados Unidos en un artículo publicado por Aaron Holmes.
«Este año hemos sido testigos de un incremento de ataques a instituciones sanitarias, aseguradoras y a varios hospitales que se han hecho público en los últimos meses», recuerda Maté. «Muchos incidentes de ransomware ya cuentan además con técnicas sofisticadas. Ahora los incidentes con ransomware ya no son simples malware que entran en el sistema y encripta; ahora vigila, exfiltra información y piden un rescate: si las víctimas no pagan, publican la información o la venden», detalla Rosell.
«En entornos sanitarios como hospitales o clínicas, o entornos que indirectamente manejan información de salud, como son las compañías aseguradoras, vemos mucha actividad de este tipo de ataques», continúa el socio director de S2 Grupo. Dos ejemplos recientes en España son, precisamente, SegurCaixa Adeslas o Mapfre.
«Lo peor de todo es que los ataques con ransomware son dinámicos: los grupos de ciberdelincuentes cambian sus tácticas cada vez que entran en la red de una víctima. Frente a ellos, los mecanismos tradicionales no son suficientes: hace falta contar con expertos de Threat Hunting en las empresas. La ciberseguridad se ha convertido en un deporte interactivo en el que ya no podemos actuar como meros espectadores, esperando ser atacados», zanja Maté.
Maté advierte que los ciberdelincuentes cuentan cada vez con más recursos y pueden disfrutar ya de soluciones automatizadas. Rosell va más allá: se va a ver tanto en los ciberataques como en las soluciones de ciberdefensa.
En palabras del socio director de S2 Grupo, los ciberdelincuentes están introduciendo ya la inteligencia artificial en sus estructuras de ataque.
Las compañías de ciberseguridad, claro, no se quedarán atrás. «También nosotros en defensa acabaremos implementando IA para identificar los TTP —tácticas, técnicas y procedimientos de los ciberdelincuentes—. «Se va a invertir mucho tanto en ataque como en defensa en los próximos años». «Mucho, mucho», insiste
Los ciberdelincuentes seguirán capitalizando la pandemia de COVID-19 para explotar la incertidumbre de sus víctimas y copar su atención para tratar de engañarlos.
De hecho, ya se han detectado casos de aplicaciones de rastreo de contactos —como RadarCOVID en España— que han resultado ser falsas, con la que mafias de criminales aprovechaban esa incertidumbre para recabar datos de sus víctimas. Este riesgo existe desde que varios países comenzaron a desarrollar sus soluciones tecnológicas para rastrear contactos contra la pandemia, y autoridades de Reino Unido no supieron darle respuesta a un ciudadano británico que preguntó por este problema.
«Nuestra vida es ya 100% digital. Por tanto, dondequiera que vayamos, tanto a nivel personal como empresarial necesitaremos un sistema de ciberseguridad a prueba de todo». Lo explica así Hervé Lambert, de Panda. «Las empresas deberemos ser más innovadoras que los ‘malos’, cada vez más profesionales y con más recursos». «Tendremos que tratar de cubrir todos los aspectos tecnológicos de las personas».
El dilema antes era formar a los trabajadores en ciberseguridad para evitar brechas en las empresas. Ahora que se ha adoptado el trabajo en remoto, las conexiones domésticas se han convertido en una superficie de ataque brutal. En palabras de Rosell, «los hogares pueden ser un punto de salto para ir más allá«. «Hay vectores de ataque que todavía no se están utilizando, pero tienen potencial».
Va más allá; «Otro ejemplo es el boom de consolas, videojuegos y nuevas tecnologías utilizadas por los niños en entornos no controlados».
Siguiendo las palabras de Lambert, la vida ya es 100% digital. Y está subida en las redes sociales.
Rosell avanza en que en S2 Grupo han detectado cómo el trabajo en ingeniería social por parte de los ciberdelincuentes crece. «Parece que los ‘malos’ tienen grandes departamentos de I+D, porque tienen bastante imaginación. Están lanzando las clásicas campañas de phishing, pero mucho más sofisticadas, además emplean OSINT, investigación en fuentes abiertas —redes sociales—».
El OSINT es una técnica por la que los hackers son capaces de conocer mejor a su objetivo recabando información disponible en internet o en las redes sociales. Con un muro de Facebook mal protegido en cuanto a privacidad, un ciberdelincuente es capaz de descubrir dónde trabaja una persona, qué cargo tiene, en qué páginas web tiene cuentas, conocer sus rutinas habituales y… asaltarle digitalmente para poder atacar a su empresa, tal y como advertía el hacker español y directivo de Telefónica, Chema Alonso.
«Se está viendo también un posicionamiento de los estados», advierte Rosell. De forma casi histórica, países como China, Rusia y Corea del Norte han utilizado colectivos de ciberdelincuentes con propósitos concretos. Eso no quiere decir, por supuesto, que esta arma no sea empleada por potencias occidentales como Estados Unidos.
Estos grupos, conocidos como «amenazas persistentes avanzadas» o por sus siglas en inglés, APT, utilizan «técnicas, tácticas y procedimientos conocidos, pero sofistican mucho sus herramientas», advierte el de S2 Grupo. «Se empiezan a ver herramientas destinadas a ataques en el mundo IT, en sistemas informáticos, pero también al mundo industrial».
En este sentido, el entorno operativo (OT) puede ser un factor de mucho más riesgo en 2021 que en 2020. «Nos pillan con las defensas demasiado bajas», advierte el experto. «Hay sectores muy adelantados, pero también otros algo rezagados como el del agua o el sanitario, en su ámbito industrial». Ahí queda «muchísimo trabajo por hacer».
