Imaginemos una ciudad capaz de pensar por sí misma, que asegure que los repartos lleguen rápidamente y al primer intento, que “separe” el tráfico para facilitar que los vehículos de emergencias lleguen a sus destinos e incluso que reúna a las mascotas perdidas con sus dueños. Esa es la promesa de la nueva generación de ciudades inteligentes, también conocidas como “ciudades cognitivas”.
Las primeras ciudades inteligentes podían percibir, pero no actuar y, sin embargo, las ciudades cognitivas podrán percibir y responder. La clave para ello será el Edge computing. Además, anticipamos que muchas de las ciudades inteligentes del futuro se ubicarán en terrenos no urbanizados: serán ciudades nuevas, construidas de cero para incorporar la inteligencia artificial, con Edge computing integrado en todos los elementos urbanos, desde las farolas hasta los contenedores de basura. El Edge computing ofrecerá mejoras reales y medibles en las vidas de los habitantes de estas ciudades, desde encontrar instantáneamente un espacio donde aparcar a reducir la factura de la luz mediante inteligencia predictiva.
Al construir una ciudad cognitiva o al actualizar la tecnología en una ya existente, lo principal es instalar la capacidad informática allí donde se generan los datos: en los hogares, los lugares de trabajo y zonas de desplazamiento. El Edge computing es esencial ya que deberemos tratar con datos procedentes de sensores integrados en todo tipo de superficies, como, por ejemplo, papeleras, desagües y cámaras en semáforos, y reaccionar en tiempo real.
Y es que, hasta el momento, en las ciudades inteligentes actuales siempre nos hemos centrado en la recogida de datos que utilizábamos para cosas como monitorizar puntos con alta densidad de tráfico o detectar fugas de agua. Pero en los próximos años, las ciudades responderán de manera dinámica a los cambios en el entorno físico, por ejemplo, ajustando el consumo de energía en tiempo real para responder al clima, solucionando problemas con el suministro de agua o gestionando la respuesta de los servicios de emergencia en caso de un incidente de tráfico. Todo de forma automatizada e inmediata.
El Internet de las cosas (IoT) y la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) se han convertido en elementos transformadores a la hora de facilitar que las tecnologías inteligentes sean más dinámicas. Por otro lado, existen las tecnologías de IA emergente, como los grandes modelos de lenguaje (large language models, LLM) que también desempeñarán un papel en el futuro, facilitando que tanto los urbanistas como los ciudadanos de a pie puedan interactuar con la ciudad en la que viven. Y, en este contexto, el Edge Computing será el ingrediente clave que nos proporcione un control efectivo sobre estas ciudades del futuro.
En definitiva, el Edge Computing o, en otras palabras, trasladar la capacidad informática a las calles, es vital para facilitar no solo la recogida de datos de las ciudades, sino una reacción rápida y automatizada a las necesidades y retos diarios. Esto forma parte de una transición generalizada que va desde sensores analógicos con una única función, como sensores de tráfico o humo, hacia cámaras inteligentes, construidas para generar datos, pero también para preservar la privacidad.
En las ciudades inteligentes del futuro, la tecnología servirá para responder a las necesidades humanas y, en este sentido, nadie puede negar que la sostenibilidad es el mayor problema que afrontan las ciudades. En este aspecto, el factor con mayor impacto, con diferencia, son los automóviles.
Las Smart cities permitirán reducir el tráfico y facilitarán la transición hacia vehículos autónomos que circulen por las calles de manera eficiente y autónoma, gestionando, por ejemplo, las entregas que no se realizan con éxito al primer intento. Este es un elemento que contribuye de manera notable a la congestión, puesto que los conductores tienen que volver a la misma dirección, a veces hasta en varias ocasiones. En una ciudad cognitiva, los datos de ubicación, compartidos de forma anónima con las empresas de reparto con el consentimiento del interesado, permitirán saber cuándo el cliente se encuentra en casa, para que las entregas lleguen al primer intento.
El aparcamiento inteligente será otra forma importante de reducir la congestión y obtener calles más eficientes. Los nodos de Edge Computing detectarán espacios de aparcamiento libres y dirigirán los coches hacia ellos en tiempo real. También facilitarán la conducción autónoma, proporcionando más puntos de datos a los sistemas autónomos de los vehículos. Además, en las ciudades inteligentes del futuro, las carreteras habrán sido diseñadas en torno a la autonomía, incorporando la comunicación vehículo-a-vehículo y vehículo-a-infraestructura.
Por último, el Edge Computing también permite a los servicios de emergencia acudir al lugar donde se produce un incidente con mayor rapidez. La infraestructura de las ciudades inteligentes es capaz de detectar un incendio en un edificio mediante sensores basados en visión artificial para activar una alarma. Esto alertará a los servicios de emergencia y a continuación una IA podrá predeterminar la ruta más segura y rápida para llegar a la escena, redirigiendo el resto del tráfico si fuese necesario.
Ya sea mediante la incorporación a ciudades existentes o la construcción en terreno no urbanizado para integrar la tecnología inteligente por todo el tejido urbano, las Smart cities del futuro serán lugares realmente centrados en el ser humano. Construidos en torno a la participación ciudadana, estos proyectos de infraestructura a gran escala agruparán bloques básicos para ofrecer soporte a todos los elementos necesarios, desde redes de comunicación y transporte a seguridad ciudadana y eficiencia energética.
En el corazón de todo ello se encontrarán múltiples nodos de Edge Computing. Estarán instalados en cada esquina, recabando información de sensores y cámaras que permitirá a la ciudad “pensar” por sí misma. Las ciudades inteligentes actuales son solamente el comienzo. La ciudad cognitiva del futuro ofrecerá una forma de vivir más segura, feliz y sostenible.
