En los tres primeros trimestres de 2019, se han registrado más de 52 acuerdos de más de 100 millones de euros o superiores en toda Europa, que incluyen Deliveroo (Reino Unido), N26 (Alemania), Glovo (España), Doctolib (Francia), Klarna (Suecia) y OutSystems (Portugal). Esta cifra supone ya más inversión que todo 2017 y 2018 juntos y casi cuatro veces más inversión que en 2016. Los datos también muestran un crecimiento cuatro veces superior en la inversión total de empresas en fase avanzada en menos de tres años, pasando de 3.000 millones de euros en mega rondas en 2016 a los 12.000 millones de euros registrados en el primer trimestre de 2019. Si la tendencia continúa, es probable que veamos cerca de 70 mega rondas de financiación en 2019, que serían más en un solo año que en los tres años anteriores juntos. Y mientras que el número de mega rondas de financiación crece exponencialmente, el tamaño medio de cada operación se mantiene relativamente estable (147 millones de euros en 2015 frente a 150 millones de euros en el primer trimestre de 2019), una muestra de que los inversores han diversificado su cartera de forma masiva.
En total, 110 empresas levantaron una gran ronda de financiación entre 2015 y 2019, y tan solo 18 realizaron más de una ronda en el mismo período. Delivery Hero, Deliveroo, Auto1, OakNorth y N26 fueron las ampliaciones más destacadas con tres mega rondas en los últimos cuatro años.
Los datos muestran que Reino Unido y Alemania son los líderes europeos indiscutibles en materia de financiación a gran escala, con más de 15.300 millones de euros invertidos en mega rondas de financiación en ambos países desde 2015 al tercer trimestre de 2019. Esta cifra ya supera a todos los demás países europeos juntos (14.700 millones de euros), y las tecnológicas de Reino Unido y Alemania consolidan su avance y se encuentran muy por delante de Israel, Suecia y Francia, que completan la lista de los cinco principales mercados en expansión.
El 73% del dinero invertido en rondas de financiación de tecnológicas en fase avanzada en Europa proviene de fuera del continente (una mezcla de firmas de Venture Capital y Private Equity, grandes empresas como Microsoft o Amazon, fondos de cobertura o fondos estatales). De los 10 principales inversores en mega rondas de financiación en tecnológicas europeas en fase avanzada, más de la mitad (6) tienen su sede fuera de Europa (EEUU, Japón, Sudáfrica, Hong Kong, Singapur y China). El japonés Softbank es responsable del mayor flujo de inversión en fase avanzada en Europa. A través de su Vision Fund, ha inyectado casi 4.000 millones de euros en empresas europeas en fase avanzada entre 2015 y el tercer trimestre de 2019, mientras que el número dos, Insight Venture Partners (EEUU), desplegó unos 1.400 millones de euros durante ese mismo período. Por inversores europeos, Reino Unido lidera de nuevo con 30, comparado con 20 con sede en Francia o 17 con sede en Alemania que hayan realizado inversiones desde 2015 al tercer trimestre de 2019.
El aumento del capital destinado a las empresas de fintech y software se debió en gran medida al aumento general de acuerdos de financiación por valor de más de 100 millones de euros para las empresas europeas de tecnología en los últimos doce meses.
En total, se han registrado 34 acuerdos para empresas europeas de fintech desde 2015 al tercer trimestre de 2019, pero dos tercios de los acuerdos sucedieron en los tres primeros trimestres de 2019. Entre el primer y el tercer trimestre de 2019 ha habido casi cinco veces más rondas de financiación de fintech europeas en fase avanzada que las registradas durante todo 2018. El sector de software también está viendo un crecimiento similar, pasando de dos acuerdos de financiación en empresas de SaaS en 2018 hasta llegar a un total de 11 en los tres primeros trimestres de 2019. “Con un talento local fuerte y mayores inversiones en las fases temprana y avanzada de las startups, no hay nada que impida al ecosistema tecnológico europeo crear gigantes de la tecnología en los próximos años”, comenta Guillaume Prince, director de Europa Continental en Stripe. “Europa ya es la región más innovadora para fintech y ahora estamos viendo cómo las empresas de software están naciendo con vocación global desde el primer día. En Stripe, queremos ayudar a que el ecosistema europeo alcance su potencial”.
Aunque se registran mayores flujos de capital hacia las tecnológicas europeas, cada vez más empresas optan por seguir siendo privadas y expandirse de forma independiente.
Aunque hemos visto algunas de las tecnológicas más importantes salir a bolsa en los últimos años, como Spotify, Delivery Hero o Farfeth, el número de IPO (Innitial Public Offering) está descendiendo rápido. Mientras que se registraron 36 IPO de tecnológicas europeas en 2017, solo se registraron 21 en 2018. Con solo 5 IPO en 2019 de momento, la cifra sigue bajando. Lo mismo ocurre con las adquisiciones; un número creciente de tecnológicas europeas busca su propio camino. Los datos muestran que hubo 629 adquisiciones de compañías tecnológicas en 2015, que ese número cayó a casi el 12% hasta llegar a 555 acuerdos en 2017 y en los primeros tres trimestres de 2019 se registran solo 273 adquisiciones. Robin Wauters, editor fundador de Tech.eu y autor del informe, comenta: “Históricamente, ha habido una brecha en la financiación en las tecnológicas en Europa en fase avanzada, lo que ha llevado a que muchas de ellas sean adquiridas por compradores de EEUU o de Asia, o a que sus acciones se coticen en bolsa por falta de opciones. Sin embargo, los datos muestran claramente que la creciente disponibilidad de capital, en su mayoría extranjero, combinada con la maduración del sector fintech, software, medtech y ‘food tech’ en Alemania y el Reino Unido, ha dado lugar a una afluencia de mega rondas de financiación de tecnológicas en Europa, pero es poco probable que vuelva a los niveles anteriores en el futuro.
