La mayoría (60%) de las empresas españolas que ofrecen servicios de telemedicina utilizan sistemas operativos antiguos, lo que las expone a más vulnerabilidades y ciber-riesgos. El 37% se enfrenta a la desconfianza de los pacientes.
La pandemia ha acelerado la digitalización del sector sanitario y la adopción de la telemedicina. Sin embargo, esto conlleva riesgos, debido a la naturaleza sensible de la información personal que se recoge, comparte y almacena, de especial interés para los ciberdelincuentes. Datos como un historial médico pueden llegar a venderse en la DarkWeb por poco más de 1€ y ser utilizados para extorsionar, ejecutar estafas y esquemas de phishing y para el robo directo de dinero. Para conocer si la transición masiva hacia la telemedicina evoluciona al mismo ritmo que las medidas de seguridad, Kaspersky ha realizado un estudio entre organizaciones sanitarias en 34 países (incluido España). La investigación pone de manifiesto que para afrontar una nueva era de medicina digital es necesario reforzar las medidas de ciberseguridad.
Aunque nuestro país se sitúa a la cabeza en cuanto a servicios de telemedicina – el 100% de las organizaciones médicas consultadas ya los han implementado, frente al 91% en Europa y 93% en el resto del mundo– la preocupación por la seguridad y la privacidad sigue siendo significativa. Según arrojan los datos de la investigación de Kaspersky, en España el 37% de las empresas sanitarias encuestadas han experimentado casos en los que los pacientes se han negado a mantener una videollamada con el personal médico por cuestiones de privacidad o seguridad de los datos.
Asimismo, el 75% de los proveedores de servicios sanitarios españoles afirma que los médicos de su organización han expresado su preocupación por la protección de los datos de los pacientes cuando realizan sesiones a distancia y sólo el 31% está muy seguro de que su organización cuenta con las medidas de seguridad necesarias. A pesar de las dificultades existentes relacionadas con su seguridad, los médicos creen que la recogida de datos es uno de los aspectos más importantes en el desarrollo de la tecnología médica. De hecho, el 80% está de acuerdo en que el sector necesita recopilar más información personal de la que actualmente posee, para poder entrenar Inteligencia Artificial y garantizar un diagnóstico fiable.
Del mismo modo, el 90% de los encuestados españoles cree que los servicios de telemedicina serán los que más valor aporten al sector sanitario en los próximos cinco años. Los profesionales señalan que la medicina a distancia es práctica y atractiva en muchos sentidos, con ventajas como el alcance inmediato, la menor transmisión de enfermedades entre los pacientes y el personal, y la posibilidad de ayudar a más personas en un plazo menor.
Con la pandemia el sector sanitario se ha visto obligado a acelerar considerablemente la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías. Sin embargo, esta rápida transición a la digitalización no se está realizando al mismo ritmo que la adopción de medidas de ciberseguridad, tal y como pone de manifiesto el estudio de Kaspersky.
Según la investigación, la mayoría (60%) de las empresas españolas que ofrecen servicios de telemedicina utilizan sistemas operativos antiguos, lo que las expone a más vulnerabilidades y ciber-riesgos. Las razones que alegan se deben principalmente a los elevados costes de actualización, problemas de compatibilidad o falta de conocimientos internos sobre cómo actualizarlos.
El uso de equipos obsoletos puede provocar ciberincidentes. Cuando los desarrolladores de software dejan de dar soporte a un sistema, también interrumpen la publicación de cualquier actualización, que, entre otras mejoras, suele contener parches de seguridad para las vulnerabilidades descubiertas. Si se dejan sin parchear, éstas pueden convertirse en un vector de ataque inicial fácil y accesible para penetrar en la infraestructura de la empresa, incluso para atacantes no cualificados. Las organizaciones sanitarias recogen una gran cantidad de datos sensibles y valiosos, lo que las convierte en uno de los objetivos más lucrativos, y los dispositivos sin parches pueden suponer un punto de entrada para los ataques.
En lo que respecta a preparación en materia de ciberseguridad, sólo el 40% de los trabajadores del sector sanitario en España reconoce estar “muy seguro” sobre la capacidad de su organización para detener eficazmente todos los ataques o brechas de seguridad que se produzcan en el perímetro de la red. Y el mismo porcentaje (40%) se muestra convencido de que su organización cuenta con una protección de seguridad informática de hardware y software adecuada y actualizada.
Además, la mitad (50%) de los encuestados de todo el mundo coincidieron en que su organización ya había sufrido fugas de datos, ataques DDoS o ransomware.
Las filtraciones de datos no siempre se producen como resultado de las acciones de los ciberdelincuentes. Muy a menudo, la información puede verse comprometida por agentes internos. Según la encuesta de Kaspersky, el 25% de los proveedores de servicios sanitarios españoles ha experimentado casos en los que sus empleados han puesto en peligro la información personal de los pacientes durante las consultas online. El mismo porcentaje cree que los médicos no entienden claramente cómo se protegen los datos de los pacientes.
Además, sólo el 13% de los proveedores de servicios sanitarios están seguros de que la mayoría del personal médico que realiza consultas online conoce de forma clara cómo se protegen los datos de sus pacientes. Esto es así a pesar de que el 70% de las organizaciones médicas ofrecen formación en concienciación sobre ciberseguridad. Estas cifras vienen a demostrar que la mayoría de la oferta formativa implementada no está adaptada a la realidad y no cubre los temas más útiles para la práctica diaria de los facultativos.
Asimismo, el 25% de los encuestados admite que algunos de sus médicos realizan consultas online utilizando aplicaciones no diseñadas específicamente para la telemedicina, como FaceTime, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp y Zoom, entre otras.
