El portal de datos COVID-19 tiene el objetivo de acelerar los esfuerzos regionales para combatir el virus mediante la creación de un depósito central para almacenar y compartir los datos de investigación disponibles.
La Comisión Europea ha puesto en marcha un portal de datos para los científicos que estudian el virus del coronavirus a fin de acelerar el acceso a los conjuntos de datos e instrumentos para reforzar los esfuerzos de investigación fomentando la reutilización de los datos y la ciencia abierta.
El portal de datos COVID-19 tiene el objetivo de acelerar los esfuerzos regionales para combatir el virus mediante la creación de un depósito central para almacenar y compartir los datos de investigación disponibles, como las secuencias de ADN, las estructuras de las proteínas, los datos de la investigación preclínica y los ensayos clínicos y los datos epidemiológicos.
Mariya Gabriel, comisaria de la UE para la innovación, la investigación, la cultura, la educación y la juventud, lo descibe como «una importante medida concreta para una cooperación más sólida en la lucha contra el coronavirus«.
La iniciativa es un esfuerzo conjunto de la Comisión, el Instituto Europeo de Bioinformática del Laboratorio Europeo de Biología Molecular (EMBL-EBI), la infraestructura Elixir y el proyecto COMPARE, en colaboración con los Estados miembros de la UE y otros socios. Además forma parte de un conjunto de medidas acordadas por los dirigentes de la UE para fomentar la coordinación paneuropea en materia de investigación e innovación para luchar contra el virus. «El intercambio rápido y abierto de datos acelera enormemente la investigación y el descubrimiento, que es esencial para responder a la pandemia de COVID-19», explica el anuncio del sitio web del portal de datos de COVID-19.
«Uno de los mayores desafíos en esta situación tan rápida es compartir datos y hallazgos de manera coordinada, a fin de comprender la enfermedad y desarrollar tratamientos y vacunas. Para hacer frente, el EMBL-EBI y sus asociados han creado el portal de datos COVID-19, que reunirá los conjuntos de datos pertinentes presentados al EMBL-EBI y a otros centros importantes de datos biomédicos. El objetivo es facilitar el intercambio y el análisis de datos y acelerar la investigación sobre coronavirus».

El portal de datos es una de las dos piezas conectadas de lo que se pretende que sea una plataforma europea de datos COVID-19 más amplia – ilustrada en el diagrama siguiente – la otra son los centros de datos del SARS-CoV-2, que «organizarán el flujo de datos de la secuencia de brotes del SARS-CoV-2 y proporcionarán un intercambio de datos abierto y completo para las comunidades de investigación europeas y mundiales», alimentados por las aportaciones de las infraestructuras nacionales de datos sanitarios y los laboratorios de salud pública.
Además de la plataforma de datos, otras medidas acordadas mediante el plan de acción incluyen la coordinación de la financiación de las investigaciones pertinentes; la ampliación de los grandes ensayos clínicos en toda la Unión Europea; el aumento del apoyo a las «empresas innovadoras»; y el apoyo a una Hackathon paneuropea a finales de abril para movilizar a los innovadores europeos y a la sociedad civil. Según el informe, las «acciones prioritarias» del plan conjunto seguirán actualizándose con las aportaciones de la Comisión y de los gobiernos nacionales en los próximos meses.
