Cada año, los expertos analizan las tendencias venideras y cuales serán las tecnologías que más destacarán. Una de las compañías especializadas en estos estudios, GlobalData, acaba de publicar el informe ‘Virtual Reality – Thematic Research‘, donde se detalla cómo las empresas de RV están utilizando cada vez más la inteligencia artificial y las tecnologías de nube para desarrollar ecosistemas más fuertes.
La realidad virtual existe, de una forma u otra, desde mediados de la década de 1950. En varios momentos del último medio siglo, se ha presentado como la próxima gran novedad en la tecnología de consumo, sin que nunca haya alcanzado su potencial. La adquisición de Oculus por parte de Facebook, por valor de 2.000 millones de dólares en 2014, provocó otra oleada de interés, y sus seguidores, deseosos de olvidar el pasado accidentado de la RV, doblaron la nueva generación de dispositivos que siguió a este acuerdo VR 1.0.
Los dispositivos de Oculus, Sony, Samsung, Google y HTC se hicieron con un lugar en el mercado, pero la RV 1.0 seguía siendo una preocupación de nicho, popular sobre todo entre los primeros usuarios acaudalados y obstaculizada, como las anteriores iteraciones de la RV, por inconvenientes técnicos y expectativas poco realistas. Por consiguiente, el sector se encuentra una vez más en transición, pasando de la RV 1.0 a una segunda generación que ofrece la posibilidad de una adopción más generalizada.
La integración de la inteligencia artificial, los servicios en la nube, el seguimiento del movimiento, el seguimiento ocular, el audio 3D y la háptica debería permitir que los dispositivos de RV de segunda generación ofrezcan experiencias verdaderamente inmersivas. GlobalData espera que el mercado de la RV, con un valor de casi 7.000 millones de dólares en 2018, se convierta en una industria de 28.000 millones de dólares en 2030, habiendo crecido a una tasa de crecimiento anual compuesta (CAGR) del 13% durante ese período.
– Silicio personalizado: Si bien hasta el momento, el ecosistema de componentes de los teléfonos inteligentes ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en la evolución de la RV, la próxima ola de innovación está siendo impulsada por el silicio construido expresamente para ello. Nvidia y AMD lideran el mercado de chips de realidad aumentada, pero Qualcomm es un competidor formidable. El chip Snapdragon XR1 de la empresa, lanzado en octubre de 2018, es el primer procesador específico de RV/RA de la industria.
– Audio 3D: La creciente demanda de auriculares sin sujeción, junto con las limitaciones inherentes a los ojos humanos, ha hecho necesaria la sincronización de las imágenes con el audio 3D para lograr una experiencia verdaderamente inmersiva. Los procesadores de señales digitales (DSP), que mejoran la calidad del audio y también hacen que los dispositivos sean más potentes en los bordes, se están convirtiendo en requisitos estándar en el mercado de la RV. Los actores establecidos en el negocio del audio 3D, como Dolby Labs, Panasonic y 3D Sound Labs, están explorando nuevas oportunidades de crecimiento.
– Inteligencia artificial: La creciente difusión de las técnicas de inteligencia artificial en las aplicaciones de RV está mejorando la inteligencia de los personajes virtuales y ofreciendo un rico entorno de inmersión. Las herramientas de aprendizaje automático de Google añaden capacidades de seguimiento del controlador 6DoF a cualquier auricular autónomo, mientras que el marco de trabajo DeepFocus de Facebook utiliza la IA para crear efectos de enfoque en la RV y LG utiliza la IA para minimizar el mareo por movimiento entre los usuarios de RV.
– Plataformas conversacionales: Ignoradas en gran medida en el espacio de la realidad virtual, Facebook introdujo Oculus Voice en 2017, pero el servicio era demasiado básicobásico. En abril de 2019, la compañía anunció planes para un nuevo asistente de voz en los dispositivos de Oculus, pero no reveló la fecha de lanzamiento. Google todavía no ha integrado Google Assistant en Daydream VR y en Mirage Solo de Lenovo. La falta de alternativas creíbles representa una oportunidad para Amazon, que ha incorporado a Lex en su servicio gestionado de RV/AR Sumeria.
– Cloud: Promete escalabilidad a los proveedores de RV. Esto impulsará la innovación en las actualizaciones de RV y servicios en un ciclo ininterrumpido. Se espera que Amazon, Microsoft, Google e IBM se beneficien de la integración de la nube y la RV en los próximos años, ya que las empresas de RV se suscribirán cada vez más a sus servicios en la nube.
– 5G: Va a aportar baja latencia, alta densidad y mayor fiabilidad, todo lo cual beneficiará a la industria de la RV, ya que el potencial de 5G para admitir un millón de dispositivos en un solo kilómetro cuadrado, sin el riesgo de atenuación de la transmisión, ayudaría al florecimiento de este mercado. Además, las empresas de telecomunicaciones podrían beneficiarse de la asociación de 5G y la RV, siendo su ritmo de penetración, sus tarifas y sus asociaciones con los proveedores de RV los que determinen su éxito.
