La Inteligencia Artificial (IA) es una tecnología compleja que está evolucionando rápidamente. A día de hoy, es imposible saber cómo será dentro de cinco años. Por eso PwC haelaborado el informe ‘2018 AI predictions: eight insights to shape business strategy’ donde, a partir de la experiencia de sus expertos en inteligencia artificial, así como de sus profesionales en auditoría, consultoría y asesoramiento legal y fiscal, intenta predecir cómo impactará esta nueva tecnología en el mundo de los negocios y en la sociedad en los próximos doce meses.
La IA afectará antes a los empleados que a los empleos. Está en boca de todos: los robots y la inteligencia artificial van a provocar una destrucción masiva de puestos de trabajo. Pero nosotros, de momento, no lo ve así PwC. Contempla un escenario mucho más complejo en el que la IA impulsa gradualmente una evolución del mercado de trabajo mucho más positiva. Donde nuevos puestos de trabajo sustituyan a los que desaparezcan y en donde las personas seguirán trabajando. pero de forma mucho más eficiente. Puede que en algunos sectores y trabajos concretos, que conllevan labores muy repetitivas, la destrucción de empleo sea mayor. Pero, según sus estimaciones realizadas después de analizar los mercados laborales de 28 países, en 2020 el porcentaje de puestos de trabajo con un alto riesgo de desaparición como consecuencia de la automatización solo llegará al 1%.
2018, un año para poner los pies en la tierra. La IA impulsará un mundo mágico en el que los coches circulen autónomamente sin accidentes, donde robots médicos diagnostiquen enfermedades en milisegundos… Pero esto no va a pasar en 2018. Una mayoría de directivos asegura que la IA será la ventaja competitiva del futuro pero ¿cómo puedo aprovecharla a día de hoy? ¿Qué herramientas existen para ayudarme a gestionar aquellas funciones más repetitivas para que mis directivos puedan dedicarle más tiempo al análisis y a realizar labores de mayor valor? Ese es el valor de la IA en 2018: no va a crear nuevas industrias (eso lo dejamos para los años venideros) pero sí va ayudar a ser mucho más productivos y eficientes en nuestro trabajo.
La IA va ayudar a saber para qué nos sirven los datos. Muchas empresas vienen dedicando grandes cantidades de dinero al big data y aún no han sido capaces de obtener un retorno de esa inversión. Seguramente, porque ha habido una desconexión entre la alta dirección y las áreas de tecnología de las compañías sobre qué hacer con los datos. A lo que se suma que nos encontrábamos, todavía, en una fase inicial de la curva de aprendizaje y las herramientas estaban poco desarrolladas. Pero esto ha cambiado. Muchas empresas están repensando su data strategy, se han vuelto más prácticas y ya empiezan a hacerse la pregunta correcta: ¿cómo puedo hacer mis procesos más eficientes? ¿Qué necesito para automatizar la recopilación de datos? A lo que se une la aparición de nuevas herramientas y desarrollos mucho más sencillos y efectivos.
La lucha por el talento se centrará en especialistas funcionales y no en tecnólogos. Imaginemos un equipo de expertos en inteligencia artificial que trabajan en una app para apoyar la toma de decisiones en la gestión de activos. Los expertos en AI conocerán bien esta tecnología pero, probablemente, no tengan un conocimiento adecuado de los mercados financieros. Necesitarán trabajar con economistas y traders para saber la mejor forma de aplicar la inteligencia artificial en este ámbito. Además, una vez que la aplicación esté en marcha, habrá que actualizarla permanentemente para adecuarla a los cambios constantes del mundo financiero. Y para esto, también, los especialistas funcionales -y no los programadores- serán los que lleven la voz cantante. De hecho, deberán desarrollarse perfiles de traductor entre negocio, tecnología y analítica para asegurar que las soluciones son realmente aplicables. Esto puede trasladarse a otros muchos sectores, como el de salud, retail…
Los ciberataques serán más potentes que nunca pero su defensa también. Cuanto más avanza la IA, más capacidad destructiva pueden tener los ciberataques. Las técnicas avanzadas en machine learning y deep learning ayudarán interpretar comportamientos y encontrar y explotar nuevas vulnerabilidades. Pero al tiempo que esperamos que la IA impulse este mismo año un incremento de las ciberamenazas, también creemos que será parte de la solución. Las mismas técnicas combinadas con tecnologías cloud serán capaces de analizar enormes cantidades de datos y detectar los problemas en tiempo real.
Las nuevas tecnologías a menudo traen nuevos miedos y amenazas, estén justificados o no. Y los máximos directivos de todas las empresas, más pronto que tarde, tendrán que responder ante sus stakeholders preguntas sobre la IA, su uso responsable, su vulnerabilidad. De hecho, ya hay algunas instituciones, como el Centro para la Cuarta Revolución Industrial de World Economic Forum, que han formulado cuales deben ser los principios para maximizar los beneficios de la IA y limitar sus riesgos.
Para Javier Barguñó, socio responsable de Data Analytics en PwC, “a corto plazo la IA va a ser fundamental para sacar partido a la gestión de enormes cantidades de datos. El Big Data lleva años en boca de todos los directivos, que han realizado grandes inversiones en equipos y tecnología. Sin embargo, no todos han sabido sacarles partido a estos esfuerzos y enfocar su estrategia de datos de manera correcta. La implementación de IA deberá estar alineada con la estrategia de cada empresa para poder generar la transformación necesaria».
