Un estudio revela que las compañías del sector industrial podrían incrementar mucho las ventas si repensaran el uso que hacen de las nuevas tecnologías.
Las empresas robotizadas venden cinco veces más que las que no lo están, generan cuatro veces más valor añadido y exportan hasta siete veces más. Sin embargo, a pesar de los beneficios evidentes del hecho de incorporar las nuevas tecnologías en los procesos productivos y adentrarse en las dinámicas de la economía 4.0, un estudio liderado por Joan Torrent, catedrático de Economía e investigador de los Estudios de Economía y Empresa de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), demuestra que las empresas del sector industrial en España no saben explotar todo el potencial de las nuevas herramientas tecnológicas.
En la investigación se han contrastado y analizado los datos de un total de 5.551 empresas de la industria española a lo largo de 25 años, en el periodo que va de 1991 a 2016, y la primera conclusión que se extrae es que las cadenas de actividad de las compañías que están robotizadas son más productivas que las que no lo están. En concreto, los trabajadores de estas empresas son 1,4 veces más productivos que los de las empresas que no operan con tecnología automatizada, y no por ello los costes laborales se han disparado, puesto que otro dato que aporta el estudio es que las empresas automatizadas gastan en nóminas solo 1,2 veces más que las que no lo están.
A pesar de estos resultados, una de las principales conclusiones del estudio es que no basta con invertir en nueva maquinaria, sino que las empresas industriales tienen que saber, además, cómo utilizarla y cómo combinar las distintas tecnologías y, en consecuencia, deben invertir también en la formación de los trabajadores, lo que representa un coste de oportunidad notable, tal como señala Torrent. «Las tecnologías no producen el efecto de plataforma entre ellas. Es decir, no son utilizadas ni con plenitud ni extensivamente por el grueso del tejido productivo», explica el autor del estudio.
La investigación, publicada a la revista internacional Technological Forecasting and Social Change (2020, también constata una de las consecuencias de la llegada de las máquinas a la industria: la destrucción de puestos de trabajo. La evolución del empleo a lo largo de los 25 años que el estudio analiza confirma que la automatización de los procesos y la introducción de grandes cantidades de datos para orientarlos tienen como efecto la pérdida progresiva de puestos de trabajo en la industria.
Es decir, con el tejido productivo actual la industria española sufre los peores males de la automatización, como la destrucción a corto plazo de miles de puestos de trabajo, y en cambio no disfruta de sus ventajas, como el aumento sostenido y significativo de la productividad. No obstante, los autores también han descubierto que la situación actual no es fruto de un proceso irreversible y que las cosas pueden cambiar, dado que, si bien la automatización destruye empleo a corto plazo, una combinación correcta de las tecnologías puede incrementar los puestos de trabajo y mejorar la calidad a largo plazo.
La presencia de robots en las empresas del sector industrial español es cada vez más frecuente y se ha multiplicado por más del doble en los últimos 25 años. Si en 1991 únicamente el 17,7 % de las compañías contaba con algún tipo de tecnología de este tipo, esta proporción había subido hasta el 39,1 % en 2016. Sin embargo, los investigadores señalan que el déficit de la industria española no es tanto de cantidad, como del modo en que se complementan unas herramientas con otras.
Si bien 4 de cada 10 compañías industriales cuentan con alguno de los procesos automatizado, no llegan a 3 de cada 10 las que aprovechan la complementariedad entre la automatización de diferentes herramientas. «Es importante entender la idea de las tecnologías de la automatización como un conjunto de tecnologías que interaccionan entre ellas y que fomentan una transformación radical de la actividad industrial», comenta Torrent.
El uso correcto de los asistentes digitales y el control de los procesos orientado para la gestión de grandes cantidades de datos son, por ejemplo, algunas de las materias en las que el sector industrial español tiene un gran margen de mejora. «Las empresas industriales españolas, mayoritariamente las pymes, utilizan tecnologías de automatización de asistencia y control numérico de la actividad muy preliminares y básicas, y esto claramente debilita sus efectos sobre la eficiencia», considera Torrent.
La otra cara de la moneda que recoge el estudio es el buen resultado que dan las inversiones en mecanismos de control basados en datos. Esta es la tecnología que es más rentable para aumentar la productividad de una planta de producción, porque precisamente sus efectos se complementan especialmente bien con otras tecnologías, tales como la automatización de procesos o una mayor flexibilidad de los sistemas de organización.
El estudio también alerta la Administración de los riesgos de no encarar de forma integral el reto de la transformación tecnológica hacia la fase 4.0. Y es que sus autores advierten que unas políticas públicas parciales pueden ser contraproducentes, ya que pueden provocar que las empresas no logren medir el alcance de sus inversiones. «Las políticas públicas de aceleración empresarial a menudo están muy parcializadas y departamentalizadas y la transformación digital requiere una coordinación de políticas transversal«, concluye el autor del estudio.
