La Comisión Europea ha seleccionado esta semana el proyecto Time Machine como una de las seis propuestas que se desarrollarán estratégicamente en la próxima década y que permitirá recuperar el patrimonio cultural de viejo continente.
Time Machine prevé diseñar e implementar nuevas tecnologías avanzadas de digitalización e inteligencia artificial (AI) para descubrir el vasto patrimonio cultural de Europa, proporcionando un acceso justo y gratuito a la información.
El proyecto permite viajar virtualmente a través de la historia de Europa, tan fácilmente como viajar de un lugar a otro. ¿Cómo se veía este camino hace 500 años? ¿Qué nombres y caras jugaron un papel en ese momento? De este modo, el pasado se convierte en una fuente de fácil acceso en la búsqueda de soluciones para los desafíos futuros.
«Time Machine creará tecnologías avanzadas de inteligencia artificial para dar sentido a grandes cantidades de información de conjuntos de datos históricos complejos», explica Sander Münster, de la Universidad Técnica de Dresden (Alemania), en un comunicado.
En esencia, una infraestructura de computación y digitalización a gran escala trazará un mapa de toda la evolución social, cultural y geográfica de Europa. Teniendo en cuenta la escala sin precedentes y la complejidad de los datos, la IA de la Time Machine incluso tiene el potencial de constituir una fuerte ventaja competitiva para Europa en la carrera mundial de la IA.
«Es probable que Time Machine se convierta en uno de los sistemas de inteligencia artificial más avanzados jamás construidos», afirma Frederic Kaplan, profesor de Humanidades Digitales en la École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) y coordinador de proyectos de Time Machine.
Esta fuente constante de nuevos conocimientos será un motor económico y dará lugar a nuevas profesiones, servicios y productos en áreas tales como educación, industrias creativas, formulación de políticas, turismo inteligente, ciudades inteligentes y modelos ambientales.
«Por lo tanto, marcaremos una nueva era para las Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades, descubriremos nuestro patrimonio cultural como nuestro activo económico más valioso y construiremos una alianza y red única de ciudades, regiones e instituciones», añade Münster.
Big Data del pasado
La Comisión Europea ha seleccionado a Time Machine porque promoverá la investigación a gran escala para desarrollar tecnologías estratégicas en la próxima década. Se le ha otorgado un millón de euros para la preparación de los planes de trabajo detallados de esta iniciativa, que tiene como objetivo extraer y utilizar el Big Data del pasado.
Ofrecerá acceso abierto al pasado de Europa a través de datos unificados y nuevos servicios de inteligencia artificial. Esto otorgará “superpoderes” a los investigadores, al revolucionar las capacidades de búsqueda del investigador individual, elevando la escala general y el alcance de las ciencias sociales y la investigación en humanidades.
El conocimiento resultante contribuirá de manera efectiva al desarrollo de respuestas estratégicas a los principales desafíos paneuropeos, como el crecimiento sostenible, el bienestar social, la migración y la integración de los migrantes y la salvaguardia de la democracia europea, según sus creadores.
Por ejemplo, los servicios para comparar configuraciones territoriales a través del espacio y el tiempo se convertirán en una herramienta esencial para desarrollar una política moderna de uso de la tierra o la planificación urbana. Asimismo, la industria del turismo será transformada por profesionales capaces de crear y gestionar nuevas experiencias posibles en la intersección del mundo digital y físico.

Otro aspecto importante: Time Machine ayudará también a transformar la educación, al crear una nueva industria dinámica para la producción de material educativo digital basado en conjuntos de datos masivos alineados. Los cursos, materiales, simulaciones y otras experiencias en línea resultantes promoverán el compromiso activo con nuestro patrimonio cultural combinado y harán que el aprendizaje continuo sea más accesible e inclusivo.
Además de las 33 instituciones principales que serán financiadas por la Comisión Europea, más de 200 organizaciones de 33 países participan ya en el proyecto, incluidas siete bibliotecas nacionales (Austria, Bélgica, Francia, Israel, Países Bajos, España, Suiza) y 19 archivos estatales (Bélgica, Bulgaria, Croacia, República Checa, Dinamarca, Estonia, Finlandia, Alemania, Hungría, Lituania, Malta, Noruega, Polonia, Rumania, Eslovenia, España, Eslovaquia, Suecia).
Asimismo, Time Machine se basa en un modelo de operación de «franquicia» que agrupa a académicos, organizaciones de patrimonio cultural, organismos gubernamentales y grandes grupos de voluntarios en torno a proyectos integrados específicos centrados en las ciudades. Ya hay franquicias en Venecia, Ámsterdam, París, Jerusalén, Budapest, Ratisbona, Nuremberg, Dresde, Amberes, Gante, Brujas, Nápoles, Utrecht, Limburgo y algunas más.
En los próximos 12 meses, se espera que Time Machine crezca como una gran comunidad de comunidades, compartiendo una plataforma estandarizada y con más herramientas de empoderamiento.
