El ecosistema ‘fintech’ es uno de los más activos en lo que a innovación tecnológica aplicada a verticales se refiere. Y también de los más consolidados: el sector ha evolucionado desde las primeras iniciativas, en las que startups iban por libre, hacia un escenario en el que las instituciones financieras tradicionales han optado por desarrollar sus propios proyectos ‘fintech’ o asociarse con compañías emergentes. Cerca de un 80% de las firmas clásicas tienen ya alianzas estratégicas de este último tipo, según indica la firma McKinsey.
El buen estado de salud de las ‘fintech’ queda probado por el volumen de inversiones que ha alcanzado en 2018, a falta de que concluya el año: 30.800 millones de dólares. Una progresión continuada, pero no por ello menos impactante, desde los 1.800 millones que acumulaba en 2011. Son datos de la misma consultora, que distingue diez tendencias clave en el estado actual del ecosistema de innovación tecnológica aplicada al sector financiero.
1. Importante diferenciación por regiones de las iniciativas. Las distintas regulaciones cada territorio configuran un panorama complejo, en el que las firmas evitan las iniciativas globales para poder cumplir con las normativas locales. Esto hace que se perciban distintos grados de desarrollo.
2. La inteligencia artificial tiene un papel significativo, pero más con un carácter evolutivo que no como el gran salto adelante que muchos prevén para conseguir escalar y monetizar las iniciativas. Esto es, al menos en el corto plazo, el papel de la IA estará más vinculado a la combinación de analítica avanzada con el modelo de negocio ya existente que a un cambio completo de modelo o al trabajo con los algoritmos más complejos.
3. La tecnología de vanguardia no siempre es la mejor opción. Frente a la aplicación de ultimísimas herramientas, que pueden ser complejas y difíciles de probar o rentabilizar, la consultora distingue el desarrollo de modelos de negocio sólidos y robustos, apoyados en la iteración basada en datos, pruebas tempranas y continuas con usuarios.
4. Los inversores son mucho más selectivos y analíticos respecto a los proyectos ‘fintech’ que respaldan. Es un ecosistema maduro, y por tanto han tenido ya ejemplos de proyectos apoyados que finalmente no han triunfado. Así es que, aunque se aumente el volumen de capital que mueven estas empresas, se observa un desplazamiento de la inversión de rondas en etapas tempranas a otras ya consolidadas, sobre todo en compañías que ya monetizan sus productos. Tanto en este punto como en el anterior, se ve un ejemplo claro en el ‘blockchain’, que ha generado muchas conversaciones pero cuya trayectoria (y los resultados vinculados a ella) todavía está por constatar.
5. Ya no llega con plantear un proyecto con buena experiencia de usuario. Antes era más fácil para las ‘fintech’ atraer a público, gracias a que su propuesta era considerablemente más intuitiva, atractiva y fácil de usar que la de las instituciones tradicionales. Pero estas han aprendido la lección. En consecuencia, los clientes ya no cambian tan rápidamente de sus firmas clásicas a las propuestas emergentes, y estas deben asimilarlo para buscar nuevas vías de diferenciación.
6. De hecho, los actores tradicionales del mercado están ya contraatacando a las ‘fintech’ en su propio terreno. En un primer momento mantuvieron una actitud conservadora, pero ahora están expandiendo masivamente sus esfuerzos para innovar.
7. Lejos de tratarse de una guerra abierta entre las firmas clásicas y las nuevas, los puntos 5 y 6 están llevando al establecimiento de alianzas entre agentes del mercado. Por la parte de las ‘fintech’, esto se debe a que muchas han alcanzado ya el grado de madurez y de saturación de mercado en su iniciativa primigenia que les obliga a crecer y diversificar, un proceso en el que muchas están buscando ir de la mano de los actores clásicos para beneficio mutuo.
8. Hay un tipo de ‘fintech’ que centran sus iniciativas en la necesidad de actualizar la infraestructura heredada de las instituciones clásicas. Este tipo de empresas tienen un potencial importante pero, dados los largos ciclos de ventas de las firmas de mayor tamaño, por el momento es más probable que se centren en los bancos o entidades de menor tamaño. Así irán probando sus propuestas y refinándolas de cara a abrirse a esos otros clientes.
9. Se está observando un cambio de tendencia a la hora de salir a bolsa. Ante la corriente mayoritaria de permanecer como empresas privadas dados los difíciles resultados de las que sí que habían pisado el parqué, en los últimos tiempos se perciben signos positivos que hacen pensar en que se producirá un cierto retorno a los mercados de las ‘fintech’.
10. Las ‘fintech’ de China muestran un nivel de desarrollo más rápido que sus homólogas occidentales, con mayor grado de innovación y mejores posibilidades de escalar. Hay una diferencia estructural en cuanto a innovación en el sector financiero según estos mercados: el ecosistema chino está dominado por gigantes tecnológicas que han lanzado sus propuestas financieras, mientras que en el occidental, son compañías centradas en un vertical que luego se expanden a otras regiones. Y en el caso chino, han conseguido un éxito más rápido, gracias en parte a que la empresa detrás de la iniciativa tiene un mayor acceso a datos y puede enfrentarse a los riesgos de forma más efectiva.
