Unos ingenieros japoneses han batido el anterior récord mundial de velocidad de Internet, alcanzando una velocidad de transmisión de datos de 319 terabits por segundo, casi el doble de la marca de 178 Tbps establecida apenas un año antes.
Lo normal es que todo el mundo quiera mayor velocidad de Internet.
De cajón.
Incluso las personas que ya tienen conexiones de alta velocidad quieren un Internet más rápido, incluidos los trabajadores de empresas y los profesionales de la informática. Más velocidad es lo que necesitan, o al menos lo que preferirían firmemente, porque cuanto más rápido se transmiten los datos entre dos dispositivos, más rápido se pueden tomar decisiones y realizar acciones.
O lo que es lo mismo: en la economía digital darwiniana, las velocidades lentas de Internet son para los rezagados y los que no tienen nada que hacer.
¿Cómo de rápida es la velocidad?
Algunos dirán que la velocidad media de Internet en EE.UU., de 99,3 Mbps, medida a principios de este año por HighSpeedInternet.com, es más que suficiente, mientras que una empresa con una plantilla considerable y un número creciente de dispositivos conectados y redes Edge necesitaría mucho más ancho de banda.
Sin embargo, para los que creen que su Internet nunca será lo suficientemente rápido, hay buenas noticias. Unos ingenieros japoneses han batido el anterior récord mundial de velocidad de Internet, alcanzando una velocidad de transmisión de datos de 319 terabits por segundo, casi el doble de la marca de 178 Tbps establecida apenas un año antes.
Para batir el récord de velocidad de Internet, los investigadores del Instituto Nacional de Tecnología de la Información y las Comunicaciones de Japón desarrollaron una fibra óptica experimental con cuatro núcleos, en lugar de uno solo. Después combinaron su fibra con un láser que disparaba pulsos a diferentes longitudes de onda y múltiples técnicas de amplificación de la señal. Esto les permitió transmitir datos a una distancia de más de 1.800 millas a 319 Tbps.
¿Qué? ¿Estaría dispuesto a conectar semejante cañón a la red de su empresa? En ese caso, le aconsejamos que frene su entusiasmo porque el «láser y los amplificadores utilizados para batir el récord de velocidad de Internet no son baratos», escribe Kristin Houser, de Freethink.
Sin embargo, no todo está perdido para los que sueñen con estas cosas. La fibra óptica experimental de cuatro núcleos utilizada para batir el último récord de velocidad se ajusta al diámetro exterior estándar de 0,125 mm, que es el utilizado actualmente para las fibras de un solo núcleo en las que se basa el servicio de Internet por fibra óptica. Esto podría acelerar la implantación, ya que no sería necesario sustituir algunas infraestructuras de hardware existentes.
«La fibra óptica de cuatro núcleos y diámetro de revestimiento estándar puede cablearse con los equipos existentes, y se espera que estas fibras puedan permitir la transmisión práctica de alta velocidad de datos a corto plazo», afirman los investigadores en su artículo publicado.
Nadie sabe cómo definen los investigadores el término «a corto plazo», pero a largo plazo estas fibras ópticas de cuatro núcleos podrían formar parte de la red troncal necesaria para impulsar la economía digital después de la 5G. Y el motor de esa economía será la automatización, los vehículos conectados, las oficinas y los hogares conectados, las infraestructuras públicas conectadas, el streaming multimedia, las tecnologías de realidad aumentada y realidad virtual, y dispositivos como los drones personales e industriales. Estas tecnologías requieren redes troncales para la transmisión de datos en tiempo real que garanticen la seguridad y un rendimiento óptimo.
Para los profesionales de TI de las empresas, los aumentos exponenciales de la velocidad de transmisión de datos son siempre bienvenidos. Aunque la velocidad alcanzada por el equipo japonés actualmente puede estar fuera del alcance de la red empresarial media, la tendencia va en la dirección correcta.
Y eso significa que seguirá habiendo un amplio ancho de banda en la red troncal para soportar la creciente necesidad provocada por las nuevas tecnologías.
