El volumen de datos que gestionan al año las empresas se incrementó en un 569% entre 2016 y 2018: de 1,45 Petabytes (PB) a 9,70. El 92% de los de las compañías es consciente del valor que tienen los datos, y un 36% ya ha puesto en marcha algunas prácticas para conseguir obtener rendimiento económico de los mismos.
Este creciente volumen de los datos que se generan en las empresas, y sobre todo, las consecuencias positivas que pueden tener su buen análisis y aplicación al negocio, ha dado lugar a que la figura del Chief Data Officer (CDO) tenga cada vez un papel mayor en las compañías.
“Vivimos en la era de los datos. Muchas compañías con base tecnológica nacieron con esta filosofía y manera de encarar los negocios, pero otras han tenido que adaptarse”, afirma el country opener de la empresa experta en análisis y visualización de datos, Toucan Toco en España, Carlos Gorbitz. “En todos los casos, cada vez se ha hecho más necesaria la presencia en la compañía de un experto en data, capaz no solo de almacenar y estructurar los datos, sino de que tengan visibilidad en toda la compañía, para afinar el modelo de negocio y la productividad. En los últimos años hemos visto un gran aumento de la demanda del CDO y seguirá creciendo hasta convertirse en una figura fundamental en casi todas las organizaciones”.

Qué es y su importancia: el CDO el responsable de datos de una empresa, tanto en cuanto a tecnología como a negocio se refiere, incluyendo seguridad. Es el profesional que gestiona el dato como activo corporativo, ya que es un recurso que no sirve con ser almacenado, sino que debe ser procesado, ordenado, tratado, analizado y sobre todo, aprovechado en la línea de negocio.
La consultora Gartner declara que este trabajador debe tener una visión clara de hacia dónde quiere llevar la compañía en los próximos 5-10 años. Los proyectos que tienen que ver con Big Data se extienden en el tiempo, por lo que esta mirada sólida ayudará a que se finalicen correctamente.
Hay múltiples indicadores que explican el auge de este perfil. Por ejemplo, del estudio Global Data Protection Index de Dell se extrae que el 76% de las empresas sufre problemas en cuanto a la disponibilidad de los datos se refiere, habiendo perdido un 27% de ellas datos de forma irreparable por no contar con una estrategia y perfil especializados.
Funciones: se encarga de la estrategia de explotación y gobierno del dato, por lo que define las políticas de seguridad en la gestión y almacenamiento del mismo, las de privacidad, está al día en cuanto a regulación se refiere… Decide qué datos, cómo y para qué se usan, valida las tecnologías que se utilizan, asegura y acuerda la trazabilidad del dato para conocer en todo momento la transformación que sufre y qué usuarios lo usan, y es consciente de la aplicación de negocio que tiene hacer uso de estos datos.
Una de las funciones del CDO debe ser ayudar a democratizar el acceso a los datos a todos los empleados, ya que hasta ahora era una información que solo podían consultar unos pocos perfiles técnicos.
Otra de las características de este perfil es la capacidad de tomar decisiones de forma ágil, para adelantarse a la competencia. Al requerirse un perfil tan versátil y completo, se suele escoger de entre los empleados que ya trabajan en la empresa, ya que son los que tienen un conocimiento del negocio más profundo.
Salario medio: se trata de una figura de creciente importancia que cada vez se valora y se cotiza más. Por supuesto, el salario varía mucho según el volumen de la compañía, puesto que actualmente es posible encontrar CDO tanto en grandes multinacionales, como en pequeñas startups. Actualmente puede alcanzar los 140.000 euros brutos anuales, con un variable añadido del 20% puesto que se trata de un puesto muy asociado con la consecución de objetivos, según afirma la I Guía Spring del Mercado Laboral, elaborada por Spring Professional de Adecco.
Sectores con más demanda: la empresa Semarchy hizo un listado de los sectores que más apuestan por la figura del CDO, encabezado por Servicios financieros, Tecnología y Medios de comunicación. Le siguen Publicidad, Entretenimiento, Retail, Deporte, Médico, Farmacéutico y Sector público.
Incremento de la presencia del CDO: la compañía Raconteur llevó a cabo un estudio en 2018, en el que indicaba que para 2019, el 90% de las compañías tendrían un CDO entre sus plantillas. Esta cifra se logrará tras haber comenzado con un escaso 12% en 2012, alcanzar un 56% en 2014 y un 63% en 2018. Gartner, por su parte, indica que esta será una posición crítica en más del 75% de las grandes empresas en 2021.
