DevOps consigue acelerar el desarrollo y creación de nuevas aplicaciones. Generan una mayor velocidad y ahorro de costes. En base a esto, la primera cuestión que se debe plantear una compañía a la hora de incorporar DevOps a su estructura, es, en qué proyectos le puede resultar útil implantarla y qué proyectos pueden continuar con un desarrollo tradicional. Por lo que es importante definir cuáles son los objetivos empresariales y así, unificar todos los equipos.

Al unir las operaciones de desarrollo e IT a lo largo de todo el ciclo de vida de un software, desde el diseño y el desarrollo hasta la producción, las DevOps lo que hacen es acelerar el ritmo y la calidad de las innovaciones de los clientes. Adoptar esta cultura puede ayudar a que cada empresa se mantenga a la vanguardia de su competencia.
Si bien muchos desarrolladores piensan en Java, Python o Ruby cuando escuchan sobre las historias de éxito de DevOps, la misma metodología de desarrollo ágil puede transformar la forma en que se desarrollan las aplicaciones Natural. De hecho, los ciclos rápidos de desarrollo de pruebas de compilación que definen DevOps también pueden traer importantes beneficios comerciales al mainframe.
Cuando la programación Natural adopta el enfoque de DevOps, puede desarrollar más rápido nuevas aplicaciones y modernizar las aplicaciones Natural existentes, para cumplir mejor con los requisitos cambiantes y reducir los costes de desarrollo de aplicaciones.
Algunos de los líderes de DevOps, como Google y Amazon, realizan cambios en las aplicaciones en vivo, a una velocidad de 20.000 implementaciones por día. Esta velocidad vertiginosa no es realista para las aplicaciones empresariales y de misión crítica, pero, sin embargo, puede beneficiarse de muchos de los principios de DevOps, como el desarrollo de equipos basados en depósitos y en la integración continua, así llegar a un estado donde se podrían implementar una vez por semana.
A partir de mi experiencia trabajando con lenguaje Natural, hay cuatro pasos principales necesarios para implementar DevOps y lograr velocidad y capacidad de respuesta con un equipo de desarrollo natural:
Por un lado, habría que trabajar con un depósito de código fuente. Es un cambio importante en la mentalidad contar con un sistema de administración de código fuente como puede ser Git, que permite a los equipos de desarrollo aprovechar el desarrollo paralelo.
En segundo lugar, aplicar la integración continua. La integración continua es una piedra angular de DevOps. Una técnica que fusiona continuamente las actualizaciones de código fuente de todos los desarrolladores de un equipo en una línea principal compartida.
En tercer lugar, automatizar las pruebas para acelerar la entrega. Cuando las aplicaciones complejas se entregan a gran velocidad, los probadores de software pueden ser el cuello de botella que determina si una iniciativa de DevOps falla o tiene éxito. Lo ideal sería automatizar el proceso de prueba de forma continua.
Y, por último, colaborar en la gestión de proyectos y cambios. Cada actividad de DevOps debe ser compatible con una tarea existente: cada cambio de código fuente, cada compilación, cada implementación debe ser rastreado y totalmente automatizado, lo que también proporciona una transparencia total en todo el ciclo de vida de desarrollo de una empresa.
Como un último apunte, destacar que la filosofía DevOps facilita la relación de todos los profesionales de una empresa, ya que permite contar con un entorno que ayuda a trabajar de manera conjunta.
