En 2021, el impacto global de los ciberataques será de seis billones de dólares. Datos como este obligan a las empresas a evolucionar sus estrategias y métodos de defensa.
La última jugada de la industria del cibercrimen ha sido valerse del miedo y la alarma social que está generando el coronavirus, la enfermedad que ya ha provocado que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) haya decretado la alerta internacional tras reportarse más de 68.000 afectados y 1.600 muertes, para cometer delitos informáticos. Lo ha hecho mediante el envío masivo de malware en correos electrónicos camuflados de advertencias y precauciones gubernamentales sobre la infección. A falta de concretar el número de víctimas de esta nueva estafa, lo cierto es que todo aquel que haya ‘picado’ en este intento de phishing ha podido ser objeto de pérdida de información personal y financiera.
Lo que deja patente este ejemplo es que la ciberdelincuencia va a seguir siendo una tendencia total en este 2020; en todas sus formas, métodos y curiosidades. Con mayor o menor alcance y dejando, o no, noticias de apertura de informativos que puedan crear, de paso, conciencia social. De esta historia se deduce también que sus entrañas están plagadas de talento y de estrategias tan dañinas como innovadoras, contando afectados a millones entre empresas, ciudadanos e incluso estados. Tanto es así que en el último y recién celebrado Foro Económico de Davos, este apartado tomó mayor protagonismo que nunca. Y, es que, según las previsiones que se dieron en la ciudad suiza, el impacto global de los ciberataques será de seis billones de dólares en 2021. La gravedad del dato ha generado que del simposio saliera también un acuerdo sectorial, al que se han sumado actores internacionales como Europol, que podría ayudar a proteger hasta a 1.000 millones de usuarios en más de 180 países. Prevención, concienciación y refuerzo de la seguridad son los parajes a alcanzar en este itinerario.
Por otra parte, los estudios de campo ya hacen más hincapié que nunca en la problemática. El barómetro global de la aseguradora Allianz habla del riesgo informático como el que más preocupa a las compañías, por delante de inquietudes históricas como la pérdida de beneficios o la legislación; y un informe de Panda Security asegura que la ciberseguridad es el segundo mayor quebradero de cabeza de los máximos directivos españoles. Aunque bien es cierto que la agitación que generan las amenazas en el país supera con creces la media global (61% frente al 35%, respectivamente).
Si miramos a lo concreto, a lo que cabe esperar en cuestiones de ciberataques en este 2020, desde Isaca Madrid aseguran que habrá una continuidad previsible de lo que pudimos experimentar el año pasado. Es decir, ransomware por doquier e introducción de malware vía correos electrónicos fraudulentos (phishing). “Un aspecto a destacar es el grado de complejidad que este tipo de ataques están adquiriendo, lo que dificulta su detección y gestión previa”, aseveran. “Además, los límites entre la red corporativa y los servicios en la nube se están haciendo progresivamente difusos y esto arrastra también a las amenazas, que se distribuyen sobre las dos zonas”. Adolfo Hernández, cofundador y subdirector del think tank especializado en ciberseguridad Thiber, añade a este grupo lo que conocemos por hacktivismo y operaciones de información. “Veremos actividad de actores estatales contra objetivos diversos que, sin duda alguna, sacarán partido de una convulsa agenda geopolítica”. En este sentido destaca la escalada de tensiones en Irán o la cita electoral norteamericana de 2020, en la que se votará al próximo presidente del país. En las anteriores de 2014 quedaron demostradas las injerencias rusas y la influencia de la consultora británica Cambridge Analytica, que utilizó más de 50 millones de datos de usuarios de Facebook para ganar el voto del actual presidente, Donald Trump.
