Tradicionalmente se denominaba economía digital al conjunto de empresas del sector TIC que desarrollaban productos y servicios informáticos y digitales para las empresas de cualquier ámbito. Sin embargo, la digitalización está extendiéndose a todas las industrias haciendo que la economía digital sea un concepto mucho más amplio.
Gracias al proyecto europeo (H2020) ENVISION, investigadores de 7 países llevamos a cabo más de 120 casos de estudio y cerca de 3 000 encuestas a pequeñas y medianas empresas europeas de distintos sectores para analizar la innovación en sus modelos de negocio. Muchos de los cambios realizados por estas empresas fueron detectados utilizando alguna herramienta de análisis y tenían un componente digital.
De las empresas analizadas por el equipo de investigación español (del que formo parte junto a Francisco J. Molina y Ángel L. Meroño), algunas querían crecer tanto nacional como internacionalmente y vieron la oportunidad de hacerlo mediante la transformación digital.
Esas transformaciones iban, curiosamente, en dos sentidos: hacia una mayor digitalización del negocio tradicional y a la inversa, del online al offline. En otros casos, la transformación digital implantada dentro de la empresa (por ejemplo, la incorporación de un sistema de recursos empresariales para automatizar los procesos) fue el desencadenante que obligó a modificar e innovar el modelo de negocio de la compañía.

Este impulso hacia la digitalización se ha acelerado en todo el mundo, también en España, a causa de la pandemia del coronavirus. Desde mediados de marzo de 2020 empresas de todos los sectores se han visto obligadas a cambiar sus modelos de negocio.
La situación sanitaria mundial, y su particular incidencia en la economía española, han provocado que muchas compañías tuvieran que modificar la forma en la que creaban valor, lo entregaban y lo capturaban.
En la mayoría de los casos el modelo de negocio se transformó digitalmente debido a la necesidad de posibilitar el teletrabajo, el consumo a distancia, la enseñanza online o la venta de todo tipo de productos con entrega a domicilio, entre otros.
Tomemos como ejemplo el caso real de una pequeña tienda física de ropa infantil. La declaración del estado de alarma supuso el cierre de este negocio, dado que la venta de ropa infantil era considerada una actividad no esencial y los ciudadanos estaban confinados sin poder salir de sus casas. Cero ventas, cero ingresos. ¿Qué podía hacer la empresaria?
La solución más habitual ha sido vender sus artículos a través de Internet, todo un reto para el que muchos comercios no estaban preparados. La pequeña tienda de ropa de nuestro ejemplo, a pesar de haber realizado inversiones previas en TIC y tener una página web donde visualizar los productos, necesitó varias semanas para modificar su modelo de negocio de offline a online.
La empresaria se dio cuenta de que la transformación digital de su modelo de negocio no es solo cuestión de tener más ordenadores, una página web más completa, con carrito de compra o más servidores.
El modelo de negocio de venta online exige, además, una modificación en la forma de crear valor, en cómo se llevan a cabo los procesos internos, la distribución de los productos, de quiénes van a ser ahora los nuevos socios clave para entregar los productos y servicios con valor añadido, así como nuevas fuentes de ingresos.
La pandemia impulsó el teletrabajo en las empresas de todo el mundo aunque hasta ahora solo se había evolucionado tímidamente hacia la adopción de esta forma de trabajo.
El estado de alarma provocó que empresas agrícolas y ganaderas, fábricas, instituciones educativas, organismos públicos y centros de salud, entre otros, tuvieran que modificar sus protocolos de actuación y adaptar los procesos internos y externos al teletrabajo, llevando la atención a sus clientes o usuarios al teléfono o los medios electrónicos.
En muchas empresas, la adopción del teletrabajo fue obligatoria, inmediata, sin posibilidad de planificarla correctamente ni de comunicarla de manera apropiada y consensuada con los empleados afectados, lo que elevó la resistencia al cambio.
En estas circunstancias entran en juego las habilidades directivas menos digitales como la inteligencia emocional, el liderazgo, la comunicación, la negociación y la motivación, para facilitar la transición hacia una nueva forma de trabajo.
En algunos casos la actividad principal y/o los valores culturales de la empresa no permiten el teletrabajo, por lo que no le ha sido posible llevar a cabo la transformación digital.
