Muchos CISOs se quejan de la escasez de fondos y el débil apoyo de su organización. Sin embargo, estos son a menudo síntomas y no el origen de los problemas. Si éstos no se conocen, los profesionales de la ciberseguridad pueden perderse en los detalles y dejar de acometer una auténtica reducción de los riesgos de seguridad.

#1 Dar prioridad al riesgo
Muchos programas de ciberseguridad no se concentran en la información más importante de la empresa.
Acción: Los CISOs pueden ayudar a sus empresas a prepararse para los peores escenarios de robo de información, manipulación o interrupción operativa, sin limitarse sólo a los sistemas de TI. Si acotamos nuestro enfoque, para asegurar los elementos más críticos del negocio, podremos proteger los activos más importantes de nuestra empresa.
Para identificar los riesgos comerciales más críticos podemos imaginarnos lo que más le preocuparía a un CEO si se produjera un ataque cibernético a las tres de la mañana de un sábado. El CEO no querría conocer los detalles técnicos o qué tipo de malware fue el causante, sino el riesgo empresarial y el impacto operacional.
#2 Planificar las herramientas de ciberseguridad
Estamos asistiendo a una proliferación de proveedores de herramientas en todos los ámbitos de la ciberseguridad. Cuando se trata de inteligencia artificial o aprendizaje automático, a menudo se crea la sensación de que, si no implementamos la nueva solución mágica de un proveedor, nos enfrentaremos a un inminente fallo de seguridad.
Acción: Incorporar un arquitecto de seguridad experimentado para desarrollar un ecosistema de herramientas de seguridad cibernética que trabajen en conjunto y sean escalables. Los CISOs deben ver más allá de la financiación inicial y orientarse a un coste total de propiedad más completo (para recursos internos y externos), capacidad para reducir el riesgo y planes escalables.
#3 Afianzar los puntos básicos
Es difícil lograr una reducción integral del riesgo si no tenemos los conceptos fundamentales definidos. El Center for Internet Security Critical Security Controls (CIS CSC) enumera el inventario y el control del hardware y del software, la gestión continua de vulnerabilidades y el uso controlado de los privilegios de administrador como los cuatro controles básicos principales.
Acción: La solución es establecer prioridades. Hay que preguntarse: ¿mi empresa aprovecha la gestión del riesgo empresarial para impulsar programas de seguridad de acceso privilegiado? ¿Se están afrontando los riesgos más importantes o se está utilizando un modelo de priorización que puede no ser el más efectivo?
#4 Obtener herramientas y capacidades a la escala adecuada
Adquirir una herramienta y no implementarla a escala para proteger los activos de información del negocio no reduce los riesgos. Con frecuencia una empresa comprará una herramienta, tendrá algunas ventajas en la implementación de algunas de las funciones y luego pasará a lo siguiente o se dará cuenta de que no tiene recursos para ejecutar a escala o para respaldar la herramienta después de que el dinero de la inversión inicial se acabe.
Acción: Alcanzar la escala adecuada es la única forma de reducir el riesgo. Las compañías que logran escalas adecuadas utilizan metodologías consistentes de medición y gestión de proyectos sólidos, y valoran el coste total para lograr la reducción de riesgo deseada. Por otro lado, si algo no está funcionando o no está funcionando con los resultados deseados, se debe suprimir el proyecto por completo, nunca dejarlo funcionando a medio gas.
