Los avances en materia de conectividad “son sumamente positivos para la sociedad, pero también suponen un peligro en ciernes para la ciberseguridad”. Las actividades laborales, los vehículos, las viviendas e incluso ciudades enteras son cada vez más ‘inteligentes’ debido a la interconectividad que alcanzan gracias al Internet de las Cosas. Pero esa relación entre objetos les convierte en vulnerables a posibles ciberataques, una amenaza de especial relevancia para las smart cities.
Según datos del estudio ‘Digital In 2018’, de Hootsuite y We Are Social, en la actualidad hay alrededor de 8.485 millones de dispositivos conectados a internet. “Hoy en día ya hay más terminales conectados a la red que personas en el mundo, una cifra que va a crecer de forma exponencial en los próximos años debido a que cada vez más dispositivos, como electrodomésticos, vehículos o incluso elementos de las ciudades, se suman a la red. Este hecho supone que, además, cada vez existen más puntos de conexión a proteger y un mayor número de potenciales objetivos para los cibercriminales”, afirma Eusebio Nieva, director técnico de Check Point para España y Portugal.
Las ciudades inteligentes están expuestas a multitud de amenazas que suponen un grave riesgo para la seguridad no sólo en términos cibernéticos, sino incluso para la salud de los ciudadanos. Estas son, apuntan desde Check Point, las principales amenazas:
1.- Control de los semáforos. Muchas ciudades cuentan con un puesto de mando central desde el cual se puede gestionar el estado de los semáforos y el tráfico. Esta estación de control ofrece incontables ventajas, ya que permite descongestionar calles con mucho tráfico o favorecer las rutas de servicios especiales. Sin embargo, en el caso de que un cibercriminal se hiciera con el control de este sistema, tendría libertad para manejar todos los semáforos de la ciudad y podría poner todos los semáforos de la ciudad en verde, provocando innumerables accidentes
2.- Ataques a los coches inteligentes. Los avances en las smart cities también están marcados por la evolución que experimentan los vehículos, no sólo en lo relativo a su fuente de energía, sino también a la conectividad. Poco a poco se van vislumbrando los primeros coches autónomos, que cuentan con infinidad de sensores que permiten calcular la distancia con todos los elementos que se encuentran a su alrededor, control de velocidad y freno y un largo etcétera. Al igual que en el caso anterior, un ciberdelincuente podría tomar el control de uno o varios de estos vehículos y provocar colisiones.
3.- Colapsar la red eléctrica. Aunque todavía no es una amenaza visible, dado que en Europa la autogestión de la electricidad en las casas no es una tendencia extendida, si supondrá un riesgo a medio plazo. Un ‘hacker’ podría tomar el control de los sistemas de gestión de potencia de las centrales eléctricas y falsear los datos de demanda, o incluso generar un apagón en toda una ciudad.
4.- Suministro de agua. Las ciudades inteligentes cuentan con sistemas que permiten controlar el flujo de agua o conocer si se ha producido alguna fuga, entre otras posibilidades. Por tanto, uno de los principales riesgos podría ser un corte en el suministro o un aumento de la presión del flujo para averiar el circuito de suministro. No obstante, la mayor amenaza la representa un posible acceso al centro de procesamiento de agua, que permitiría modificar los niveles de aditivos químicos del agua y causar problemas de salud pública.
5.- Cámaras de vigilancia. Las smart cities cuentan con infinidad de cámaras de seguridad, que en el caso de ser ‘hackeadas’, podrían ser utilizadas para espiar a personas o controlar los movimientos de un objetivo.
“La implantación de la tecnología con el objetivo de mejorar y facilitar nuestras vidas es un hecho. Sin embargo, en muchas ocasiones se pone el foco únicamente en la inversión y en las medidas que se requieren para llevar a cabo esta innovación, obviando las medidas de seguridad necesarias para esta protegidos de amenazas cada vez más potentes”, señala Eusebio Nieva.
“En Check Point”, agrega Nieva, “somos conscientes de la necesidad de ofrecer soluciones capaces de cubrir cada vez más dispositivos y por eso apostamos por la escalabilidad como motor de desarrollo de la ciberseguridad del futuro”.
