Según una nueva investigación académica llevada a cabo por la escuela de negocios Wharton de la Universidad de Pensilvania, IHS Markit y Qlik, bajo el título de Índice de Alfabetización de Datos o DLI, por sus siglas en inglés. El DLI es una investigación impulsada por el Data Literacy Project (DLP), una nueva organización formada por empresas y organizaciones líderes internacionales del sector cuyo objetivo es mejorar la alfabetización de datos de los profesionales.
En cuanto a las empresas españolas, estas muestran un desempeño positivo en cuanto a su capacidad para gestionar, analizar y utilizar datos para tomar decisiones estratégicas, obteniendo 71 puntos sobre 100 en el DLI. Sin embargo, se sitúan a la cola de las organizaciones europeas, y tan solo superan a las japonesas a nivel global entre las regiones analizadas. Por el contrario, Singapur es el país más maduro en cuanto a estrategias de análisis, gestión y monetización de datos.
El DLI es un modelo estadístico que evalúa a las empresas en función de su nivel de alfabetización de datos, es decir, la capacidad de los profesionales de una empresa para leer, analizar, compartir y trabajar con datos, utilizándolos para tomar decisiones estratégicas. Este modelo estudia si las empresas disponen de los datos necesarios para el correcto desempeño de su negocio y su capacidad para usarlos para tomar decisiones. Esta habilidad es especialmente importante en el contexto de la economía digital, donde los datos se generan a una gran velocidad y en enormes cantidades.
Para elaborar el DLI, se han medido tres indicadores en más de 600 compañías cotizadas de Estados Unidos, Europa y Asia con al menos 500 empleados y que representan una amplia gama de sectores, como banca y finanzas, fabricación, comercio minorista, transporte, salud, energía, construcción, servicios públicos o comunicaciones. Para otorgar la puntuación, la escuela de negocios Wharton han desarrollado un modelo estadístico para el que se ha tenido en cuenta tres dimensiones relacionadas con la gestión del dato.
En primer lugar, se ha estudiado la capacidad de los empleados para trabajar con datos; en segundo lugar, el papel que los datos juegan en los procesos de toma de decisiones de las empresas encuestadas (siendo claves su disponibilidad y facilidad de uso); y, en tercer lugar, la distribución equitativa del dato a lo largo de la empresa. En base a estos 3 indicadores, los investigadores han otorgado a las empresas una puntuación global que puede ir desde 0 hasta 100.
Existe una relación directa y positiva entre la alfabetización de datos de las empresas y sus ingresos, pero las compañías, aunque conscientes, no se adaptan
Las grandes empresas cuyos empleados poseen un mayor conocimiento de gestión de datos experimentan un aumento de hasta un 5% en su valoración empresarial, lo que significa hasta 475 millones de euros más de media para la muestra analizada (con un valor de 9.522 millones de euros de media). Además, la investigación también indica una correlación positiva con otras medidas del desempeño corporativo, como el margen bruto, el rendimiento sobre activos, el rendimiento sobre el capital y el rendimiento sobre las ventas. A pesar de ello, existe una brecha cómo perciben las empresas la importancia del dato y sus esfuerzos para adaptarse a su gestión y monetizarlos.
Aunque el 98% de los líderes empresariales considera que los datos son importantes para tomar decisiones de negocio y que el 93% afirma que disponer de empleados expertos en datos facilita significativamente esta toma de decisiones, tan solo el 8% de las empresas ha realizado grandes cambios en su estrategia de gestión del dato en los últimos 5 años.

Por otro lado, tan solo el 24% de los profesionales se siente capaz de leer, trabajar, analizar y comunicarse con datos, es decir, alfabetizados en datos. Este bajo índice individual de alfabetización de datos es especialmente relevante si se tiene en cuenta que los líderes empresariales no están dispuestos a comprometer recursos para mejorarlo: únicamente el 34% de las organizaciones ofrece formación a sus empleados en este sentido, tan solo el 17% los anima a mejorar sus habilidades de datos y solo el 36% está dispuesta a remunerar más a los empleados con mejores habilidades en datos. Mientras que el 63% de las compañías planea contratar más empleados con conocimientos de datos, la responsabilidad recae en el individuo, agravando aún más esta brecha de habilidades.
Administración, hostelería y turismo y servicios financieros, los sectores mejor preparados para analizar sus datos
A nivel internacional, las empresas muestran más diferencias en cuanto a la alfabetización de datos de sus empleados entre sectores que entre países. Las empresas del sector salud, venta minorista e inmobiliario demuestran un desempeño inferior (con puntuaciones respectivas de 67.1, 69.2 y 70.7 puntos), mientras que las industrias de servicios administrativos, técnicos y financieros tuvieron un desempeño más alto (81.1, 80.2 y 77.4 puntos respectivamente).
