Empresas de dinero electrónico y del sector de los pagos, ¿son más o menos vulnerables que los principales actores financieros?
Las fintechs y las principales entidades financieras se toman muy en serio los riesgos existentes por causa de la ciberseguridad, al igual que sus ejecutivos son conscientes del valor de los datos que tienen almacenados en sus sistemas. Teniendo en cuenta que cada ‘jugador’ es un potencial objetivo de los ciberataques, el foco no solo debe estar en la protección contra dichos embates, si no en su detección y en un plan de continuidad de la actividad.
Sea cual sea el objetivo de los ciberataques, una PYME, un banco o empresas de dinero electrónico, éstos son prácticamente iguales para todas ellas
Sin embargo, existen algunos elementos diferenciales entre empresas de dinero electrónico y del sector de los pagos, y las principales entidades financieras que podemos identificar fácilmente:
1. Las empresas de dinero electrónico y del sector de los pagos son todavía estructuras pequeñas; sin embargo, tradicionalmente, los ataques suelen estar dirigidos a empresas de mayor tamaño, generando un importante impacto de imagen o fraude.
2. Dichas empresas han construido sus servicios con nuevas tecnologías, menos propensas a las vulnerabilidades de seguridad (como los ciberataques que utilizan las debilidades del sistema operativo de Microsoft); no tienen que administrar y mantener un legado obsoleto, una fuente de mayor vulnerabilidad.
3. En general, confían en servicios outsourcing externalizados de gran tamaño, que durante años han desarrollado capacidades de protección y resistencia muy sólidas. Los modelos que trabajan en la nube también han demostrado durante años su supremacía en el campo de servidores internos.
4. Por otra parte, la menor experiencia de estas empresas jóvenes y sus limitados recursos humanos puede sin lugar a dudas exponerlas a ciertos ataques; esta fragilidad se ve compensada por su gran agilidad y capacidad de reacción.
Apertura de sistemas informáticos junto al pago instantáneo en 2018: ¿traerá nuevos riesgos?
2018 será un año rico en términos de cambios para el sector de los pagos. La apertura de los sistemas informáticos y los pagos instantáneos conllevará un mayor número de oportunidades y ajustes para todos los ‘jugadores’ de este ecosistema. Las APIs no constituyen una innovación en sí mismas para el sector FinTech, que se encuentra en gran medida construido sobre esta tecnología: durante años han demostrado su valor en este campo. Además están recomendadas por la Comisión Europea en un documento llamado RTS (Regulatory Technical Standards), publicado a finales de noviembre de 2017, que confirma que las APIs son la tecnología más recomendada para los intercambios interbancarios.
Y por otro lado se encuentra la industria SaaS (Software as a Service, o instalación de software en servidores remotos accesibles a través de páginas webs y no de dispositivos físicos), que está evolucionando a través de la apertura anunciada de sistemas informáticos.
Los protocolos y técnicas de autenticación llevan tiempo siendo utilizados por los bancos en sus aplicaciones internas; por ejemplo, una aplicación de banca móvil se puede conectar con los sistemas legacy, que son aquellos que han quedado anticuados pero siguen siendo utilizados por el usuario y no se pueden actualizar o reemplazar fácilmente. Además las técnicas de autenticación de terceros también existen y están testadas (por ejemplo, el protocolo OAUTH2 te permite autorizar a un sitio web o una aplicación para que utilice la API de otro sitio web u otra aplicación).
En consecuencia, todas las partes interesadas tienen las herramientas para conectar a los bancos y los nuevos ‘jugadores’ de forma eficiente y segura. Queda por ver si todos dispondrán de los recursos y la agilidad para aprovechar esta evolución del sector.
Mientras que la economía vive al ritmo de Internet y de la inmediatez, parece incongruente que a día de hoy tengamos que esperar 24/48 horas para que un pago se haga efectivo, mientras que la fase de pago en sí misma (checkout), tanto si se lleva a cabo en una cajero físico o a través de una web, sólo tarda unos segundos. Precisamente, el debate alrededor del pago instantáneo es el resultado del deseo de conseguir que el sector se mueva al mismo ritmo que la sociedad actual, lo cual constituiría una verdadera evolución. Desde noviembre de 2017, algunos de los involucrados en el sector financiero, como es el caso de Caixabank, ya están listos para usar este nuevo sistema de pagos lanzado por el EPC (Consejo Europeo de Pagos). Poco a poco, el resto de entidades europeas deberían ser capaces de operar así.
En materia de seguridad, la instantaneidad puede ser un reto para algunos. De hecho, la gestión de los pagos “por lotes” ofrece la comodidad de poder bloquear las transacciones sospechosas antes de ser ejecutadas. Pero es entonces cuando entra en juego la cuestión de la duración de estos controles. Sin embargo, las tecnologías actuales (en particular Machine Learning y servicios online de gestión financiera en tiempo real como los robo-advisors), permiten responder eficaz y rápidamente a este problema. Este es también el principio de las APIs y el pago instantáneo: hacer posible la instantaneidad tanto en la ejecución como en el control de pagos.
Por tanto, el tema de la seguridad debe ser tratado como cualquier otro desafío dentro de una empresa. Ninguna industria se ha desarrollado en detrimento de la seguridad y ésta nunca ha impedido la innovación y el apoyo a los cambios en nuestra sociedad. De esta manera, una innovación que provoque inseguridad nunca será usada y no agregará valor a una empresa. Pero es sin duda la tasa de uso y el nivel de beneficio lo que otorga éxito a una innovación.
