Dos de cada tres empresas industriales españolas se están quedando atrás en el proceso de digitalización del sector. Así lo revela el informe Global Digital Operations Study 2018, elaborado por Strategy&, la consultora estratégica de PwC, que hace un análisis del estado de la Industria 4.o en el mundo y en España, a partir de entrevistas 1.155 directivos de compañías industriales en 26 países. El estudio concluye que el 68% de las compañías industriales españolas están en un estadio de digitalización medio o bajo y un 32% en un nivel avanzado. De ellas, un 5% puede considerarse como digital champions -líderes digitales-. Esto es, que ya tienen plenamente digitalizada e integrada toda su cadena de valor: desde sus procesos de fabricación y sus operaciones, pasando por su capital humano, sus procesos comerciales y sus relaciones con clientes y proveedores.
El documento clasifica a las empresas industriales en cuatro grupos, en función de su nivel de digitalización: digital champions o líderes digitales, digital innovators o innovadoras, digital followers o seguidoras digitales, y digital novices, novatas. Y concluye que, en nuestro país, el 21% de las compañías industriales se encuentra en una fase incipiente de digitalización -novatas-, y un 47% está en un estado algo más desarrollado -tienen digitalizadas y conectadas entre sí algunas áreas funcionales-, pero todavía insuficiente. Son las denominadas seguidoras o followers.
Pero ¿cómo de digitalizada está nuestra industria en relación a la del resto del mundo? Para poder dar respuesta a esta pregunta, el estudio incluye un índice de digitalización por país, elaborado a partir del análisis de tres grandes variables: la capacidad que tienen las compañías para incorporar las nuevas tecnologías, el nivel de madurez de su ecosistema digital y su cultura digital.
Este análisis otorga a las empresas industriales españolas 43,6 puntos, una calificación ligeramente por encima de los 43,3 puntos que obtienen la media de las empresas entrevistadas en todo el mundo. Lo que nos permite decir que las empresas industriales españolas están en un punto de digitalización similar a la media del resto del mundo. Aunque si nos referimos al grupo de compañías más punteras, nos encontramos con que en España solo el 5% puede considerarse digitalmente avanzadas, mientras que a nivel mundial este porcentaje es del 10%.
Prueba de que el camino a recorrer es todavía largo, es que en la actualidad el 80,4% de los ingresos de las empresas industriales españolas procede de productos y servicios tradicionales y nada más que un 19,6% de productos y servicios con algún componente digital. Una relación que, según el informe, irá cambiando muy lentamente: dentro de cinco años se espera que pase de un 80%/20% a un 78%/22%.
Impacto de la digitalización en el negocio
El estudio revela que las empresas españolas esperan un retorno claro de sus inversiones en las nuevas tecnologías digitales, tanto en términos de incremento de ingresos como de mejora de la eficiencia. Concretamente, para los próximos cinco años, nuestras compañías industriales prevén, de media, aumentar sus ingresos un 11,1% y reducir sus costes un 19,4% como consecuencia directa de la digitalización.
Cuando se les pregunta sobre cuáles son las tecnologías en las que están invirtiendo y cuáles creen que tienen mayor potencial de futuro. Nos encontramos con que las tecnologías predictivas para el mantenimiento de activos y productos y la implantación de sistemas digitales para controlar y monitorizar los procesos de fabricación -conocidos como sistemas MES- son a las que están dedicado, prioritariamente sus inversiones. Mientras que las relacionadas con el Internet de las Cosas son las que consideran tiene mayor proyección.
El estudio analiza de forma separada la aplicación de la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) en la industria española y concluye que su uso es muy marginal debido a tres razones principales: los trabajadores no cuentan con la capacitación necesaria, las técnicas de IA no están lo suficientemente desarrolladas y el retorno sobre la inversión no está todavía claro.
Las empresas industriales españolas creen que la digitalización de sus procesos de fabricación y de producción tendrá un impacto directo en la gestión de su capital humano. Un 89%, por ejemplo, prevé que aumente la contratación de trabajadores cualificados, en los próximos cinco años, y un 50% espera también un crecimiento del salario medio. Por el contrario, un 61% cree que el empleo de aquellos profesionales menos cualificados disminuirá. La digitalización también tendrá sus efectos en términos de incremento de la producción de nuestras compañías industriales, tanto en España como fuera del país.
