Las soluciones de gestión y seguridad relacionadas con las APIs son ahora más importantes que nunca a medida que éstas, las aplicaciones y los datos que intercambian se vuelven cada vez más estratégicos para las empresas. Y es que, según una reciente investigación de F5, las aplicaciones modernas ahora constituyen el 51% de los portafolios empresariales.
Así los estaba la edición 2024 del Informe State of Application Strategy Report (SOAS)1, donde también se anticipa que para 2025, la proporción de aplicaciones modernas ascenderá al 60%, y eventualmente alcanzará aproximadamente el 85%. Sin embargo, se espera que las aplicaciones tradicionales continúen siendo utilizadas en sectores como los Servicios Financieros, debido a su rol en infraestructuras críticas.
«Las soluciones puntuales, como los API gateways, no serán suficientes. Automatizar la infraestructura de seguridad de aplicaciones y APIs puede ayudar, pero las tasas de automatización en el dominio de IT aún están por debajo del 50%. Las organizaciones mejor protegidas y más eficientes necesitarán implementar estrategias integrales para realizar un seguimiento, gestionar y proteger sus APIs”, incide Aran Erel, director general de F5 en España.
El notable aumento de las aplicaciones modernas y sus microservicios ha generado un incremento exponencial en la cantidad de APIs. Las empresas con ingresos anuales superiores a 10.000 millones de dólares gestionan, en promedio, más de 1.000 aplicaciones y casi 1.400 APIs. Un pequeño grupo incluso administra más de 10.000 APIs.
En el informe de F5, el 90% de los encuestados indican que gestionan menos de 200 aplicaciones, una cifra que tiende a reducirse conforme avanzan en sus procesos de transformación digital. En contraste, el número de APIs sigue en aumento, con el 41% de los profesionales encuestados administrando al menos tantas APIs como aplicaciones.
Este fenómeno se explica porque las APIs se han convertido en una herramienta esencial para las empresas que consolidan aplicaciones, automatizan procesos e integran la IA en sus modelos de negocio. El informe SOAS de F5 destaca que la cantidad media de APIs crece un 5% en cada etapa de la transformación digital.
El informe SOAS de este año revela que tanto las aplicaciones modernas como las tradicionales y sus APIs se están implementando mayoritariamente en entornos multicloud. Cerca del 90% de las organizaciones operan en entornos multicloud, con un 38% utilizando seis entornos diferentes, casi el doble que en 2023. Esta distribución incrementa la complejidad de gestión.
El principal desafío sigue siendo la gestión de la complejidad operativa, que involucra múltiples herramientas, paneles, soluciones y políticas de seguridad personalizadas, y la falta de visibilidad de las aplicaciones. La migración de aplicaciones entre entornos ha escalado en importancia, convirtiéndose en el segundo desafío más citado. La seguridad multicloud sigue siendo una preocupación constante.
La visibilidad de las aplicaciones se mantiene como una preocupación significativa, aunque en menor medida. Algunas organizaciones están abordando los desafíos de seguridad y visibilidad mediante soluciones de Seguridad como Servicio (SECaaS).
