Los acontecimientos transformadores de los últimos años pueden hacer sonar finalmente la campana de la muerte de los sistemas ERP tradicionales, ya que las empresas buscan agilidad, flexibilidad y rapidez.
Al adentrarse en la década digital de 2020, las empresas están contemplando la adopción de una nueva generación de tecnologías de planificación de recursos empresariales (ERP) colaborativas, componibles y basadas en la nube, motivadas por una terca pandemia, cadenas de suministro inseguras, fuerzas de trabajo transitorias y otros factores.
Un abrumador 94% de las organizaciones de todo el mundo está adoptando una estrategia de ERP de nueva generación que implica la migración a plataformas en la nube y la adopción de análisis de alta gama, como la inteligencia artificial, para superar las limitaciones de las aplicaciones heredadas y modernizar sus negocios, según una encuesta realizada por Boomi a 1.675 ejecutivos de TI.
Gartner ha pronosticado que el 65% de las organizaciones adoptarán aplicaciones ERP que utilicen uno o más de los que denomina «sellos de la cuarta era» para 2023. Entre ellas se encuentran la IA, el diseño centrado en los datos, los sistemas que se pueden utilizar fuera de la plataforma, las funciones que aumentan las decisiones, la habilitación de los desarrolladores y la tecnología orientada al cliente.
Los retos de los dos últimos años «están inclinando la balanza hacia una adopción más rápida de los sistemas ERP de nueva generación», señala un equipo de analistas dirigido por Neveen Awad en un informe publicado por Boston Consulting Group. «Será prácticamente imposible utilizar el ERP tradicional para gestionar el enorme crecimiento previsto del comercio electrónico y la necesidad de flexibilidad y rapidez», explicaban. Hay un impulso hacia la provisión de funciones de finanzas, compras y recursos humanos con «una automatización avanzada que se apoya en menos trabajadores, pero más cualificados, y en trabajadores que pueden operar desde sus casas«.
A continuación, se exponen tres áreas en las que los sistemas ERP tradicionales se quedan cortos y lo que las empresas buscan hoy en día.
Si había alguna duda sobre el paso a un ERP basado en la nube, se disipó con el estallido de la crisis del COVID y la dispersión de los puestos de trabajo de las empresas en innumerables oficinas domésticas. El ERP local se considera «no tan escalable como la gente pensaba», dice Sharon Bhalaru, socia de la consultora de contabilidad y tecnología Armanino LLP. «Estamos viendo un movimiento hacia sistemas basados en la nube», para apoyar a los empleados remotos que necesitan realizar tareas de RRHH, financieras y contables a distancia.
Los aproximadamente seis de cada diez trabajadores estadounidenses que afirman que su trabajo puede realizarse principalmente desde casa lo hacen todo o casi todo el tiempo, según una reciente encuesta del Pew Research Center. Se trata de un aumento significativo respecto al 23% que decía trabajar a distancia antes de la pandemia.
Además, la proporción de trabajadores autónomos no temporales alcanza un máximo histórico del 36% de la población activa, según una encuesta de Upwork. La mayoría de estos autónomos (53%) prestan servicios cualificados como la programación informática, el marketing, la informática y la consultoría empresarial, frente al 50% del año anterior. El componente de recursos humanos de los sistemas de planificación de recursos empresariales tendrá que tener en cuenta la rápida incorporación, los horarios imprevisibles y la frecuente rotación de personal. También hay más organizaciones que buscan personal en el extranjero, lo que tiene implicaciones para la presentación de informes al gobierno, los impuestos y los beneficios, entre otros factores.
Los acontecimientos recientes también han puesto de manifiesto las capacidades relativamente débiles de los ERP tradicionales para la elaboración de informes. «Queremos tener los datos al alcance de la mano y tomar decisiones muy rápidamente «Los informes de los sistemas ERP no eran aplicables para muchas empresas», dice Bhalaru. «Ahora buscan informes y cuadros de mando y capacidades de KPI —indicadores clave de rendimiento— desde el principio, cuando están diseñando y construyendo el sistema», en lugar de crear dichas capacidades con el tiempo.
Las plataformas ERP de nueva generación «ofrecen a las empresas transparencia en tiempo real con respecto a las ventas, el inventario, la producción y las finanzas«, escribieron los analistas del Boston Consulting Group. «Los potentes análisis basados en datos permiten tomar decisiones más ágiles, como los ajustes en la cadena de suministro para mejorar la resistencia. Las sólidas capacidades de comercio electrónico ayudan a las empresas a relacionarse mejor con los clientes en línea antes y después de una venta. Y un núcleo de ERP ligero y un enfoque que da prioridad a la nube aumentan la velocidad de implementación».
Las interrupciones sin precedentes y continuas de la cadena de suministro subrayan la necesidad de una mayor visibilidad, tiempos de entrega más predecibles, fuentes de suministro alternativas y una respuesta más rápida a las interrupciones.
Una encuesta de FiveTran y Dimensional Data reveló que el 86% de los ejecutivos busca acceso a datos en tiempo real a través de sus sistemas ERP. Sin embargo, sólo el 23% dijo que tales capacidades existen dentro de sus sistemas ERP actuales y el 99% informó que no pueden acceder a la información que necesitan.
Antes de la pandemia, las empresas «estaban muy centradas en la optimización de la cadena de suministro en la búsqueda del santo grial del abastecimiento justo a tiempo», afirma Mike Rulf, director de tecnología de América de la consultora de ERP Syntax.
«Esto se hizo con la suposición de que sus proveedores podrían entregar en horarios contractuales predefinidos que estaban estrechamente integrados con los sistemas ERP. Esas suposiciones se fueron por la ventana».
